You know how WordPress has a spot for you to add a tagline to your blog? Well, if your life was a WordPress blog, what do you think your tagline would be? Here’s mine:

It’s a pretty straightforward subtitle to a pretty complex thing (AKA: my life), but I honestly think that if more people understood just how much of my identity is connected to reading, then they might also come to better understand my soft Ginger soul (yes, I do have one, thank you very much).

Reading is like my second heart – it pumps letters and words and stories and magic all throughout my body, and because of it, I’m alive. Not just living, but truly alive. That being said, reading doesn’t ONLY involve books. There are things I love to read besides pages and tomes, if you can believe it. So let me channel my inner-Aladdin and take you on a magical carpet ride; I’ll show you some of my favorite non-books and it will be a whole new world.

Actual footage of me showing you the things I love to read besides books.

Webtoons

I like love ABSOLUTELY ADORE reading Line Webtoons, which is a free digital comic service where you can read stories created by artists all over the world. I discovered this beautiful, beautiful app a few years back when I accidentally stumbled across Siren’s Lament by instantmiso. Honestly, Siren’s Lament was like my gateway drug; it got me instantly hooked on webcomics (haha it’s funny for two reasons. First because INSTANTLY…Like the creator’s name, INSTANTmiso? And two, because like…sirens…mermaids…fish…hooks? Get it? Hahahasobs. I break my own heart sometimes with all my very horrible puns).

Anyways major-organ-splitting jokes aside, here are some of my waffley-loved Webtoons that you all should 10000000% check out … like, right now. This very moment.

Are you still reading this post? WHY???? GO READ THESE WEBTOONS SO WE CAN SQUEAL ABOUT THEM TOGETHER.

Siren’s Lament by Instantmiso

I already mentioned this one, but gosh, it deserves so much more than a brief mention, so here we are. Talking about it. Again. BECAUSE THIS IS ART AT IT’S FINEST, PEOPLE. Don’t believe me? Well then, take a gander at this beaut:

I think I’ve made my point. And not only is the art amazing, but the story deserves an A+ as well. It’s got attractive siren/mermen (a major plus), a curse gone hopelessly awol, and a love triangle that I actually enjoy (*GASP* What is this madness???? Who would have thought this day would come? Not I, friends. Not I).

Here’s the official blurb from Webtoons:

Content with her ordinary life, Lyra is somewhat of a wallflower. However, her comfortable lifestyle suddenly goes astray when she accidentally plunges into the world of sirens. Entangled in a curse, Lyra will learn that her world may be a lot bigger than she had ever imagined.

I Love Yoo by Quimchee

This webtoon never fails to make me laugh. And I’m not talking about the soft, under-your-breath sort of chuckles here. I mean the so-loud-you-wake-the-baby kind of belly laughs (True story. The hubbie wasn’t very pleased with me that night). Also, the main character,  Shin-Ae, is my spirit animal. Like, I connect with her on a very emotional level.

If those two screenshots weren’t enough to convince you to read this amazing work of literature, then here’s the official Webtoons blurb:

Dogged by pain and misfortune from the very beginning, Shin-Ae decides she wants nothing to do with people nor anything to do with romance. Although content with her unsocial, boring, loveless existence, her lifestyle is challenged after she ruins an unsuspecting strangers’ clothes.

A Good Day To Be A Dog by Lee Hey

As somebody who is deathly allergic to cats, I’m a dog person by default (which is really too bad because have you ever SEEN a kitten? CUTEST THINGS ON THE PLANET EARTH. POSSIBLY IN THE UNIVERSE. IN ALL THE UNIVERSES…but nbd. I’m totally not bitter). However, the mere existence of this dog-centered webtoon makes me less sad about my uncooperative nose. I mean, just look at this adorably innocent pupper:

Now if only my husband wasn’t allergic to dogs…

Basically, this webtoon is one big ball of cute fluff and it gives me new life. Every time a new chapter comes out, my skin is clear. My grades are up. The sun is shining. I have 20/20 vision (which is a big deal for me ‘cause I’m pretty much blind without my glasses). In all seriousness though, this comic is so adorable and stress-free, it makes my Scrooge-like heart feel a bit lighter whenever I read it.

Book Blogs

I think we’ve sufficiently established that I love to read books and now webtoons, so let’s move onto the next segment of this scheduled program: BOOK BLOGGGSSS. Oh yesh, not only do I spend hours reading books that then I review on my blog, but I also spend hours reading about books that other people have read and then reviewed on their blog. (I’m being sucked into the endless book vortex and I have absolutely no regrets.)

Actual footage of me being sucked in by the bookish community.

In case you didn’t already know, there are a lot of blogs out there. Like, more than two. And for that reason, it can be pretty overwhelming to figure out which ones you want to read and follow, and which ones you don’t. Be that as it may, there are a few blogs that I would cross all of the Underworld to read. Like, if it was one of these blogger’s scheduled posting days and I somehow found myself stranded in the depths of Hades (as one does), I would single-handedly fight the three-headed Cerberus, brave the Furies, and then doggy-paddle across the River Styx, all just so that I could read these people’s blogs. They are that good.

I was lucky enough to be the one to design a lot of Drizzle & Hurricane Book’s graphics. Check out my design shop here. (Yay for shameless self-promotion!)

Marie is an angel – I’m not even exaggerating here. I’m pretty sure she has the halo and the wings and everything. Not only is she one of the sweetest, most uplifting, and genuinely sincere people I have met in the book community, but her content is always on point. She and her lovely sister, Nyx, are Contemporary Goddesses, so if you’re ever in the mood for a YA Contemporary book, their word is basically law.

Some of my favorite posts from Marie & Nyx:

If Nyx and Marie are Contemporary Goddesses, then Kaleena is the Spreadsheet Queen. Her Book Blogger Spreadsheets are a work of art that rival the Mona Lisa, and her tutorial posts are like stained glass – beautiful, clear, and completely transparent. When I first started blogging I felt like I was drowning in all the stuff that I didn’t know, but Kaleena’s blog was the liferaft that saved me. Now instead of drowning, I’m just floundering (because who really knows what the heck they are doing?…Certainly not I).

Some of my favorite posts from Kaleena:

You know how at the end of a long day, when you get home from school/work/whatever and you just want to curl up on your couch and eat a big carton of ice cream (preferably of the gallon variety)? Melanie’s blog is like that ice cream – it’s comforting and happy and it always makes me feel better. Plus, she’s just plain hilarious, and who doesn’t need more laughs in their lives? I know I do; I don’t laugh nearly enough.

Some of my favorite posts from Melanie:

  • Hufflepuff Book Recs! When Only the Friendliest Books Will Do
  • 8 Stress-Free Books // For Anxious Readers Like Me Who Cannot Take One More Second of Angst
  • Beginner’s Guide to the Contemporary Genre!!!! Ft. Recs to Help You Become Contemporary Trash

Gosh, there are so many others I could mention, but since this post is already as long as Rapunzel’s hair, I’m going to cut it off here.

In other words, this post is reaaallllly long.

OMG KAT YOUR JOKES ARE TEN/TEN PLS KEEP MAKING THE PUNS. also, webtoons have become soo popular at school, and I actually did read a good chunk of I Love Yoo, but then stopped. I have no idea why, but I think it’s just that i have zero time for tv shows, webtoons and the like because I’ve already committed myself to blogging and reading hahaha. I’ve heard the most amazing things about Siren’s Lament though. and ahh, I feel you so much on the fact that Marie is like a literal angel. Her interaction skills are just on a god tier, and ugh she just does so much for the community!!

Webtoons are super popular??? SWEET! I’M [UNINTENTIONALLY] HIP AND TRENDY. And I totally understand about not having enough time for everything. I love blogging, but it is SO TIME CONSUMING. Like, I wish I could make five or six clones of myself. Maybe then I would actually be able to tackle my TBR *sobs* AND YES YES YES. I will forever praise Marie for being the true angel that she is.

What a wonderful post, I recently discovered Webtoons too, but I haven’t had the time to read much on there yet! 😂 & yes, I love reading Marie & Nyx’s blog, there’s always such fantastic discussion posts & reviews!! 💞

Thank you so much for this lovely comment! And I totally understand what you mean about not having enough time – there are just not enough hours in the day to read all the things we want to haha.

Great post Kat!! I actually haven’t read any webtoons because they didn’t really seem like my thing? Are they like online graphic novels because that’s what I think it is, and I’m not a big graphic novel fan. I honestly really don’t like them. But I think I should check them out and make sure first…

Some of my favorite blogs to read are yours obviously, Meeghan’s @ Meeghan Reads, Xandra’s @ Starry Sky Books and Christina’s @ A Recipe and a Read.

    • Kat @ Novels & Waffles July 22, 2019 at 2:27 pm - Reply

Basically, Webtoons are online graphic novels that get updated with a new chapter every week. If that’s not your cup of apple juice, that’s cool too. Everybody has their own tastes 💛 To be honest, I think I like them so much because I grew up reading manga haha.

Ahh.. the webcomics you showed were so cute– you definitely made me want to read them all!! I’ve never read any– I will have to get on that ASAP!! And I always love your puns– puns for life!!
I love to read book blogs as well — I love how passionate everyone is about books!! 😍 And you’ve mentioned some wonderful blogs here!!
    Lovely post!! 💛

I totally agree with you about the procrastination thing – I’m super good at procrastinating stuff hahahasobs. AND THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SUPPORTING MY PUNS. I honestly wonder sometimes if they are just too awful to post, but you have restored my confidence a bit 💛 And the webcomics are really fun! I would love to hear your thoughts about them, if you ever get around to reading any!

Oh, I love this post! It’s so cute (as every single one of your posts are!!). And omg yes, I love webcomics with my entire life! I’m trying to read more webcomics but it’s a little hard because 1) I feel guilty for not reading novels (even though I’m slumping so hard right now and webcomics are like the only thing I can read), and 2) a lot of the characters are drawn in an anime/manga-like style, and while I think it’s totally great that they are, I just get uncomfortable with them for ~internalized feelings about Asian media and its relation to the fetishization of Asians~ 😅 But I’ve heard such great things about Siren’s Lament and will probably end up reading it!!

    • Kat @ Novels & Waffles July 22, 2019 at 2:44 pm - Reply

OH GOODNESS, MAYYYY! You are too good to me 💛 Thank you so much for your kind words! And YESH WEBCOMICS ALL THE WAY. What are some of your favorites? I’m always looking for new things to read (to distract me from the books that I should ACTUALLY be reading hahahasobs). But yeah, I can totally see what you mean about the manga/anime thing.

Ahh I love Webtoon too! I tend to read more horror story though, my favorite is Ghost Teller :D I’m currently hooked on Lore Olympus, it’s like reading a reality-tv version of the Olympians!

    • Kat @ Novels & Waffles July 22, 2019 at 2:46 pm - Reply

Yay! Another Webtoons lover! And I’m a total wuss, so I can’t stomach any sort of horror. I recently watched the third season of Stranger Things, and it had me jumping like crazy. I had to cover my eyes at a lot of parts haha. But I’ve heard so many good things about Lore Olympus! I read a couple of chapters, but for some reason, I just never continued with it???? I dunno why ahaha

Also, I totally understand what you mean about not liking to read on your phone. I feel the same way, so I always read it on my ipad (which has a bigger screen and doesn’t make me feel like i’m an old lady because I have to squint to read the small print) or on my computer. But I don’t know if that’s actually any better haha.

I can’t even imagine how exciting that must be for the artist. Anyways, thank you so much for your lovely comment, Aimee! 💛

oh, i am super late to this party!

other than fiction, i love reading cookbooks that actually talk about food and recipes. I also love reading about architecture, and I love those coffee table books that talk about special exhibits at museums of sacred objects – those are the books that are like $300 in a museum gift shop but I can usually find them on the resale market for $10-$25. there is so much good stuff online, i know, but i’m an old soul with terrible eyes, i simply suck at reading on a screen. paper and ink works better for me. Plop me down in the “food writing” or “artwork” section of any used bookstore, and I am in heaven!

    • Kat @ Novels & Waffles July 22, 2019 at 6:56 pm - Reply

That’s so cool that you read those exhibit books! My husband likes to read stuff like that too. I never would’ve thought to look for them on resale, but that’s a really good idea! And I agree, I much prefer to read actual books. Sadly though, because I live overseas and don’t have a lot of space in my little apartment, I mostly read on my kindle. Thanks so much for the lovely comment and for dropping by 💛
