A Wonderlandish Adventure That Doesn't Quite Work // Caraval by Stephanie Garber
An Eerie Seaside Crucible // The Wicked Deep by Shea Ernshaw

This month, my waffle iron broke. No more waffles for me. As Anne from Anne of Green Gables once said, “Oh, this is the most tragical thing that has ever happened to me!”

I think this is just cause for a nationwide panic. Or at the very least it should merit a couple of pouty lips and forlorn sighs. Maybe next month I’ll be able to replace it.

In any case, August was a rather pathetic month in regards to reading. I only was able to finish four books, which is not so great considering I have three more library books about to expire on my Kindle that I should have read much, much earlier.

On the other hand, I have been working on my blog so, SO much. I migrated over from Blogger, which was no easy feat, let me tell you, and I also completely rebranded my entire site. I’m really liking the changes, and I hope to be able to become more active in this community now that I’m all settled in. I feel sort of like I just finished unpacking all my belongings from their moving boxes and now I can get to work with the actual BLOGGING part of this blog.

Reaper at the Gates // Sabaa Tahir // ★★★★☆ – Although I enjoyed this book, it took me awhile to do so. It had been so long since I read the last book in the series, that I couldn’t remember the characters or what was going on. I think I need to make more time in my reading schedule for rereads.

The Dry // Jane Harper // ★★★★☆ – This was August’s book choice for an International Book Club I do with my friends back in the States. Listening to the audiobook was like an ice-cream sundae, except for my ears. I ate up the narrator’s thick Australian accent.

Caraval // Stephanie Garber // ★★★☆☆ – The world of this book held so much promise, but somehow the magic of the zany Caraval was squandered on a cheap romance and characters that I didn’t love. Also, LEGEND. He was the most fascinating part of this book, so I hope we learn more about him in the sequel.

The Wicked Deep // Shea Ernshaw // ★★☆☆☆ – Such an eerie read. This book did a great job creating an immersive atmosphere, but in the end, I just didn’t love it as much as I was hoping I would. Most of the characters felt a bit flat, and the romance happened too quickly for my slow-burn tastebuds.

Avengers: Infinity WarSo, as I’m sure a lot of you know, one of the drawbacks of living abroad is that you can’t just drive over to the movie theater and catch the latest Hollywood flick whenever you want to. International release dates don’t often match up with American ones and only movies with larger budgets make it to theaters at all. As such, my husband and I had to wait until Avengers: Infinity War was available on iTunes before we could watch it. And let me tell you, AVOIDING SPOILERS WAS A COMPLETE NIGHTMARE. BUT IT WAS SOOOOOO WORTH IT. OH WOULD YOU LOOK AT THAT, WE HAVE ENTERED ALL CAPS RANTING MODE HERE, PEOPLE. THE ENDING OF THE MOVIE HAD ME LIKE:

Voltron: Legendary Defender // Season 7 I loved Season 6 and was so very, very excited that the gang was FINALLY headed back home to Earth. It was a good season, but if any of you happen to follow the show, then you know there was a lot of drama that accompanied it’s release. In any case, I still enjoyed it a lot, especially its Family Feud inspired episode.

To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before The bookish community was off-the-wall, over-the-moon, completely and utterly excited for this movie. And guess what? Now the whole world is off-the-wall, over-the-moon, completely and utterly OBSESSED with this movie. I know I am. I was not expecting to love it as much as I do  – Netflix’s other attempts at RomComs have been atrocious (The Kissing Booth, I’m looking at you). I thought Lana Condor’s performance as Lara Jean was fantastic, and now I am #275 on my library’s waiting list for the book. NUMBER 2-7-5, PEOPLE! I’m going to be 45 years old by the time I actually get my hands on a copy.  Can I wait that long?

Citizen KaneI watched this movie with my husband via iTunes. Neither of us had seen it before, but all I could think of the whole time was of a scene from Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

Rosa: Citizen Kane is terrible. Pick a good movie.
Charles: Good call. Smart. I’ll do it. I’ll pick a better movie than Citizen Kane.

Incredibles 2 – This was one of the rare times that I actually saw a movie in the theater. We set up a babysitter for our one-year-old and drove over half-an-hour to a theater that had a showing with subtitles instead of a Japanese dubbed version. AND IT WAS WORTH IT. As a mother of a young child, I understood this movie on a spiritual level. And let me just say, ELASTIGIRL IS #GOALS.

I loved the To All the Boys movie so much, it was such an incredibly cute rom-com! I hope you manage to get your hands on the book soon!

It really was adorable, wasn’t it????? I honestly haven’t watched a rom-com as good as this one in a LONG TIME. What ever happened to romantic comedies, anyways? I feel like there haven’t been any really good ones for a long time. I want more Meg Ryan and Tom Hank movies!

      • Rose September 1, 2018 at 6:51 am - Reply

Me neither, I think the last one I watched was Love Rosie a few years ago which is another one of my favourites. There really needs to be more rom-coms out there! I’m kind of fed up of all the movies that are out now, I feel like they’re all just the same thing but with different actors haha.

AGREEDDDD. And the new stuff generally just doesn’t give me those BUTTERFLIES, you know what I mean?

          • Rose September 3, 2018 at 6:23 pm

Definitely! I want to be able to feel all the feels when I watch rom-coms!

haha Thanks! Yeah, so mayyyybeeeee I over-exaggerated the waffle iron thing, but if I can’t be silly on my own blog, then where can I be, right? Thank you so much for checking out my little piece of the blogosphere!

I think August was a tough reading month for all of us, but you read 5 books more than me – well done!!! I am sorry about your waffle iron though, it really does sound like a tragedy of epic proportions. May you get a replacement soon! :D
I don’t know how your blog looked like on blogger, but I love what I am seeing here. The header is one of the cutest ever <3

DAWWWW THANK YOU SO MUCH! That means a lot to me :) I’m kind of a perfectionist when it comes to my blog…it took me wayyyyy longer than it should have to settle on how I wanted it to look!

I get that! And your blog is also like your baby, so you want to show it to the world in the right light.

I had similar feelings about caraval. Shame about wicked deep though, I want to check that out. Hope you get a new waffle iron soon!

Hey Kat. I believe this is the first time I’m visiting your blog? But I love it. Your header is my favorite thing. It is so cute. And congratulations on migrating the site. I know it is never easy but the final result always makes you happy.

It’s okay to read 4 books a month. It is still a pretty great number as compared to reading nothing at all :) I have heard mixed things about Caraval and The Wicked Deep. But I would like to read The Wicked Deep for sure.

I am yet to see To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before movie because I refuse to see it before reading the book :D I am about to read that book next week and I’ll join this loving train too :D

Yay, for Avengers. I can understand the film releasing situation for us international viewers. But I happy you finally saw it :)

I hope you have a lovely September.

Thanks for taking the time to visit, Simant! And dawwwwww thank you so much for your kind words! You’re getting a copy of TATBILB? Lucky! I hope you like it! You have such self-restraint to wait – I thought about trying to read the book first, but I just HAD to see the movie as soon as it came out, so…yeah haha. Being an International viewer when you like Hollywood films can be hard, can’t it?

Anyways, I hope yave a great September!

        Thank you so much!

I love how you do the thumbs up thumbs down stuff in your pictures! That’s a really cool idea! 😊

And I loved To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before, Infinity War and Incredibles 2 too! I loved that we saw Dash and Violet’s powers evolve – they were finally free to put themselves and their powers out there! Violets was especially cool I thought 💕
