In case you weren’t aware, the New Year is finally upon us and, well, can we all just give a round of applause for that? Heck, can we all give it a full-blown standing ovation? Because this year has been a hot mess, inside a dumpster fire, inside a train wreck and I think we can all agree that it’s high time we kick it to the curb (or all the way to Mars, preferably).

But before I ctrl + alt + delete 2020 from my brain’s hard drive entirely, I think it’s only appropriate to take a few moments (or let’s be honest here, it’s going to be more like five-hundred moments since I like to wax poetic) to say thank you to all the television that has kept me company during quarantine and made all those long days at home semi-bearable. So let me raise a glass and give a heartfelt shout-out to my top 10 favorite movies and shows of 2020. I (and my sanity) owe you one.

Soul looks super cute!! And I have yet to watch Julie & the Phantoms.

I do watch Anne with an E here and there when we get it on TV and we like it alot with my parents! Mother ended up reading all the Anne’s book 😅 Which I still didn’t, ahah

    • Kat @ Novels & Waffles January 2, 2021 at 8:22 pm - Reply

Soul was ABSOLUTELY amazing and so was Julie & the Phantoms. I would 100% recommend both :)

And ermmygoshhhhh Anne with an E is just… *chief’s kiss* Especially Season 3. And don’t worry, I haven’t read any of the books either, though I really want to

Anyways, thanks for stopping by! It means so much to me :)

I love pretty much everything mentioned here and omg at that little grogu graphic you made! Great picks all around really, because literally the only thing I haven’t seen yet is Emma, but I LOVED all the others!

    • Kat @ Novels & Waffles January 5, 2021 at 8:51 am - Reply

Thanks so much, Kat! I’m glad to hear that you like my picks – to be honest, I found out about a lot of these (such as Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist and Love And Monsters) because of your weekly “Trailers You Might Have Missed,” series. I read that every week, so that you SO much for always posting those! And Emma is amazing! It’s such a quirky take on the story and I personally lik it much better than the Gwyneth Paltrow version.

      • Kat Impossible January 5, 2021 at 9:06 am - Reply

Honestly, that just warms my heart incredibly and means so much to me! That’s pretty much exactly the reason I keep doing them. (And in the hopes that I get people that I can talk about certain shows/movies with haha cause I watch those trailers either way)
And Emma does have my attention. I have to look if it’s available on a platform I am subscribed to.

I loved Dash &Lily, The Good Place and Julie and the Phantoms so much! They really helped this year to not be as tragic as it could have been.

    • Kat @ Novels & Waffles January 5, 2021 at 8:52 am - Reply

I totally agree! They were just so HAPPY and I think we all needed an extra reason to laugh and smile. Anyways, thank you so much, Kayla, for you lovely comment and for stopping by!

Knives Out has got to be one of my favourite who-dun-its of all time. The casting is spot on and I live for Daniel Craig in these super eccentric roles. A lot of these shows are on my tbr list, but I’m really curious to see how this adaptation of Emma compared to the older ones. The graphics you made for this post are also adorable!!

    • Kat @ Novels & Waffles January 5, 2021 at 8:56 am - Reply

I totally agree about Knives Out – SO GOOD. I love how creative it is and that it twists the genre on it’s head. And I personally adored this version of Emma – it’s kind of quirky, but I personally loved how fresh it felt, while still sticking to the original source material. Plus, Anya Taylor-Joy’s performance was just *clenches fists* SO AMAZING.

  5. Nushu @ Not A Prima Donna Girl January 3, 2021 at 2:53 am - Reply

Soul and Emma look so fun! I’ve been meaning to watch Emma for a whlie.

    • Kat @ Novels & Waffles January 5, 2021 at 8:58 am - Reply

I really, really adored this version! I’ve seen quite a few adaptations of Emma, but what I like about this one so much was that it felt so fresh, while still sticking to the original source material. Oh, and it has Anya Taylor-Joy. So there’s always that, haha

  6. Dezzy @ The Thoughtful Voice January 3, 2021 at 7:04 pm - Reply

wonderful post, Kat!! i really love the graphics you designed for your reactions 😊 i just finished watching Julie and the Phantoms season 1 today and absolutely LOVED it, this show made me feel alllll the feels and i truly love all of the characters so much :’) and don’t even get me started on the music – i’ve been playing the entire JATP soundtrack on repeat all night, haha. the songs are all bops 🤩 i also love The Good Place and Soul! definitely going to check out the other shows you mentioned as well :)) happy new year!

    • Kat @ Novels & Waffles January 5, 2021 at 9:04 am - Reply

Oh my gosh, thank you so much Dezzy!AND OH MY GERSH YESSSS! I kind of started watching the show on a whim, but then I fell in love with it! The cast is just so great, and the chemistry between Julie and Luke is just…wow. It just was such a ray of sunshine in an otherwise pretty dark time. If you liked Julie and the Phantoms, I would 110% recommend Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist. It’s got beautifully choreographed dance numbers, lots of EMOTIONS™, a great cast, and it’s just wholesome fun! Anyways, thanks for stopping by and Happy New Year to you too!

I really want to get to Anne With An E and Emma last year, but I just suddenly wasn’t in the mood 😂 Knives Out was one of my top movies though, along with Ready or Not and The Old Guard! (maybe I was just in the mood for action? lol)

    • Kat @ Novels & Waffles January 5, 2021 at 9:07 am - Reply

Ahhhh Anne with an E. The first two seasons were good, but the third was UTTER PERFECTION. But yeah, you definitely have to be in the right mood for it. And I’m glad to hear that you liked Knives Out too! I haven’t seen Ready or Not or the Old Gaurd because I’m kind of a whimp when it comes to intense action/horror movies haha. Anyways, thanks so much for stopping by and Happy New Year, Tasya!

The reaction graphics 😍!! I need to get to so many of these shows and movies! I just watched Soul and LOVED the animation and the message 🥺. One of my favorite movies this year was Lovebirds! It’s a romcom on Netflix that cracked me up 😂. Happy new year, Kat!

    • Kat @ Novels & Waffles January 5, 2021 at 9:10 am - Reply

Belle, thank you so much for your lovely comment! It made my day! And yes, I 100% agree with everything you said about Soul. It was so beautiful – both visually and thematically. I’ve rewatched it a couple of already, haha. Also, I hadn’t heard of Lovebirds before, so I looked up the premise and it definitely sounds like the sort of thing that would be funny to watch! Anyways, thank you and Happy New Year to you too!

I loved Knives Out so much! It’s been such a long time since I watched it so I’ll definitely have to watch it again!

    • Kat @ Novels & Waffles January 5, 2021 at 1:43 pm - Reply

I’m glad you liked it so much too! I’ve only watched it the one time, so I def want to rewatch too!

  10. Dezzy @ The Thoughtful Voice January 5, 2021 at 11:24 am - Reply

100% agreed about your thoughts on JATP, it definitely made me smile & laugh so much (except the Unsaid Emily scene, which hit me right in the heart and i may have shed a few tears 😭) and omg! thanks so much for that recommendation, i’ll definitely check out Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist – it sounds super fun ☺️

Such a cute format, I loved reading about your favorites! ❤ I also loved Julie and the Phantoms, the songs were all amazing and the episodes managed to cheer me up 🥰 Dash & Lily was perfect for the festive season and so much fun!

Thanks so much, Caro! And I totally agree about what you said – Julie and the Phantoms was the exact ray of sunshine we all needed! And Dash & Lily was SO CUTE I just can’t even haha.

YES KAT!!!! I swear I watch the whole season of Julie and Phantoms about 5 times. I am wholly obsessed. I also loved The Mandalorian and Dash and Lily. Please go watch Bridgerton (you won’t regret it), and I am off to find Love and Monsters!!

    • Kat @ Novels & Waffles January 9, 2021 at 7:49 pm - Reply

AW YESSS JULIE AND THE PHANTOMMMMS! It’s just so wholesome, the cast is amazing, and don’t even get me started on the chemistry between Julie and Luke. I started watching it on a whim, but I finished the whole season in like, two days ahaha. I’ve been hearing good things about Bridgerton, and although I’m not sure I’ll end up watching it (too much to do, so little time *deep sigh*) the costumes are just…*clenches fist* ART.

      • Meeghan reads January 9, 2021 at 10:20 pm - Reply

Kat, Bridgerton is AMAZING. Gossip girl, but way better (and definitely not wholesome). But honestly the music is one of my fave parts. They’ve taken modern songs (bad buy, wildest dreams, etc), but they’re all played as classic instrumental pieces to fit the era. It’s seriously amazing.

      • Meeghan reads January 9, 2021 at 10:22 pm - Reply

Also, 5,000 yes’ to Julie and the Phantoms. I love it so much, I’m not sure I could actually love it any more. “Don’t tell me how to ghost” is now a common saying in my life.
I can’t believe Netflix hasn’t announced a second season yet!!!!!!!!!!

        • Kat @ Novels & Waffles January 14, 2021 at 8:48 am - Reply

They haven’t??? I sure hope it’s coming soon(ish) because that ending had me like, “WHUUUUUUUUUUUTTT?”

          • Meeghan reads January 14, 2021 at 1:24 pm

I know!!!!! I so desperately want them to renew another season!! 😭😭

  13. cherelle @ a bolt out of the book January 8, 2021 at 8:20 pm - Reply

Awww I loved this post, and the short succinct ways you recommended them… I totally agree, Anne with An E, had such a swoon worthy romance and emotional topics of family and friendships, I was so glad that the tv series managed to live up to the book for that… ahhh I have to watch Dash & Lily soon!!

    • Kat @ Novels & Waffles January 9, 2021 at 7:51 pm - Reply

I’m so glad you loved the post, Cherelle! And YAY another Anne with an E fan! I seriously have watched that last episode at least five times. It give me goosebumps every. single. time. And yes, please watch Dash & Lily! It’s really just so cute and wholesome. I haven’t read the book, so I can’t say whether it lives up to the source material, but I seriously enjoyed.

Omg love this post Kat!! I always love doing movie posts, even though I mostly take my time haha. But also love everything on your list. Also “a hot mess, inside a dumpster fire, inside a train wreck” is very accurate

ANNE WITH AN E OMG MY FAVE!!!! I’m still sad that it was cancelled but oof it’s so so so amazing. And I really want to watch Julie and The Phantoms because the internet just won’t stop raving and I have FOMO. I also def have Emma and Soul on my 2021 watch list. I didn’t watch all that many new movies last year because not that many came out so I have lots to catch up on hehe

    • Kat @ Novels & Waffles January 22, 2021 at 6:10 am - Reply

RUBYYYYYY 💛💛💛 Thank you SO much for this lovely commment – I wasn’t sure if I should post this since I’ve only really written about books up to this point, but I’m glad to see people are still interested.

AND OH MY GOSH YESHHHH ANOTHER AWAE FAN! I’m totally crushed that it was cancelled too, but at least that ending was perfect and satisfying. I would’ve rioted if it ended on a cliffhanger that never got resolved (I’m sad that we never found out what happened to Ka’kwet and her parents though…plus I feel like they were setting up for a romance between Sebastian and Ms. Stacey that I would’ve loved to see play out). But oh well *sigh*
