The weather’s getting warmer, the sun’s rising earlier, and the cherry blossoms are popping up everywhere like cotton-candy-colored kettle corn. (Mhhhhmmm kettle corn…I’m already making myself hungry, and we’re only on the first sentence of this post. That must be a new record or something haha.) Add all these things up, and you can only come to one conclusion: SPRINGTIME IS FINALLY HERE! β¨π±πΈππΊβ¨ππ·π€πβ¨
With that in mind, I’ve got a question for you: are you feeling twitterpated? Because, as that crazy old owl in Disney’s Bambi once said, “Nearly everybody gets twitterpated in the springtime.” Well, I guess I’m one of those rare souls who fall into the “nearly” category, because I’m not exactly feeling overjoyed with the world situation right now. BUT, let’s choose to focus on the positive, shall we? And one of those positive things is this: I read a couple of excellent books in March that put my head in a total whirl!
What I Read in March
π±House of Salt and Sorrows by Erin A. Craig: Reading this dark Twelve Dancing Princesses retelling was like ordering a large Ultra Cheese Dominos pizza and then proceeding to consume the whole thing by yourself. In one sitting. In under fifteen minutes. Basically, it sounded like a wonderful idea in theory, but was decidedly less so in actual execution.
π±To Best the Boys by Mary Weber: I would describe this as The Maze Runner meets The Hunger Games and that’s not even the best part. What’s the best part then, you might ask? Well, it’s the fact that this book sends one big FLYING KICK-A-POW to the patriarchy’s tender parts.
π§A Kingdom for A Stage by Heidi Heilig: In Japanese, there’s this word γΎγγΎγ (maa maa), which when roughly translated, means something along the lines of “so-so,” “passable,” or “meh.” That basically sums up my feelings for this book; there was nothing I particularly disliked about it, but there was nothing I particularly liked about it, either. It was γΎγγΎγ.
π±Seven Deadly Shadows by Courtney Alameda and Valynne E. Maetani: As Dorothy Gale would say: “Yokai and shinigami and kitsune, oh my!” (Wait, you don’t remember her saying that? Okay okay okay, so I might’ve taken a few creative liberties…Please donβt sue me, MGM Studios π¦). But all slightly-altered Wizard of Oz quotes aside, this book presents a wonderful snapshot of Japanese culture and for that alone, I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it.
π§Frankly in Love by David Yoon: This book’s writing style is very…unique. It tries so hard to be funny and endearingly sarcastic, but like beauty, humor is in the eye of the beholder. And for some reason, the jokes fell as flat for me as this sad, gravity-KO’d balloon.
π±Tweet Cute by Emma Lord: I think Emma Lord now lords over my heart because this cute, cheesy debut of hers has completely capitalized all of my love. It has a haters-to-lovers romance, a strong You’ve Got Mail vibe, and lots of tantalizing food descriptions that sound so good, it should be illegal. I mean honestly, what more could I possibly want from a book? Nothing, my friends. Nothing.
π±The Flatshare by Beth O’Leary: As somebody whose rambunctious three-year-old routinely wakes her up at the butt-crack of dawn, it’s easy to understand why I highly value my sleep. So the fact that this addictively fun rom-com left me bleary-eyed and running on way too few hours of shut-eye should tell you something. And it should definitely be a good something.
#YARC Reading Challenge Update
What I Watched in March
Anne with an E {Season 2 Rewatch}: The first time I watched Season 2 of this show I was…caught off guard? Disappointed? Maybe a bit of both? The plot veered away from the source material so drastically that I wasn’t exactly sure what to make of it. But this time around, I was completely and totally charmed. CHARMED, I SAY! slams fist down on desk emphatically to drive point home and then regrets it, because ow Amybeth McNulty’s performance is an utter delight to watch and don’t even get me started on Gilbert’s artful mastery of the Look of Longingβ’ because mmmhhhm it be good.
Iron Man 2: So confession time β my husband and I decided to start a chronological MCU movie marathon last year. LAST FREAKIN’ YEAR, FOLKS. And we are only now making it to Iron Man 2, which is like…the third movie on a list of over twenty. Oof. Talk about embarrassing. Also, *in my best Gandalf voice * I have no memory of this movie. Like, at all.
Little Women (2020): As a diehard fan of the childhood-friends-to-lovers trope, I’ve always secretly thought it a perfect travesty that Jo and Laurie didn’t end up together. But this rendition of Little Women showed me that NOPE NOPE NOPE I was wrong to ever doubt the genius of Louisa May Alcott’s vision. I have corrected my ways and at last I see the light. *spontaneously breaks into a Tangled sing-a-long*
Jumanji (The Next Level): If films were rated solely based on the amount of stitch-splitting laughter that they manage to wrangle out of me, then this one should’ve won an Oscar. I haven’t laughed so hard since…I don’t know when (and let’s face it, right now we could all benefit from a good, old-fashioned giggle fit). But although this movie was highly entertaining, the plot itself was pretty subpar, especially when compared to the previous franchise installments.
This Month on the Blog
I think we can all agree that March lasted for an eternity. How are you all handling this craziness?
Let’s share some positivity! What’s something good that’s happened to you this month?
I love your positive attitude, Katπ I still need to watch Little Women, maybe it’s streaming somewhere?
Thanks so much, Tammy! πLittle Women is available for purchase on itunes, if you’re up for buying a digital copy.
Oh I love the new Jumanji movies, they’re just so funny! I’ve been watching a lot of comedy lately and this one is just one of the best! :D
Yes, exactly! I’ve been itching for some more comedy movies too β I think we all just need a good laugh to help us through these difficult times. Thanks so much for a lovely comment ππ
March has been hectic indeed but I’m glad you found some good books. I’m glad to hear you enjoyed The Flatshare as I read it last year and I really liked it, it was fun and important (which is like my favourite combo). Plus the twilight scene was amazing!!
I’m glad you loved Tweet Cute, I like that it has You’ve Got Mail vibes!!
I haven’t watched the new Little Women movie but I want to!! And Jumanji as it looks like a lot of fun !!!
I hope you have an awesome April π (wow I just wrote July, what just happened?!?!)
I’m so glad to hear that you liked The Flatshare too, Sophie! πAnd you’re completely right – it had just the right mix of fun, fluffy romance, and more intense, serious topics.
Anyways, I hope you have a wonderful April and that you’re able to stay safe, happy, and healthy πππ Thanks for such a lovely comment!
Aww, Iβm sorry Frankly In Love flopped for you π. I guess Iβm the target audience for its humor because I was I had a good chuckle at the book π .
And Iβve been wanting to watch the MCU movies in order for so long now too! I think 3 movies is better than 0 hahaha. And I was so surprised by how much I genuinely enjoyed the newest Jumanji movies π.
Iβm glad your March had bits of fun amidst all thatβs happening. I hope your April is safe and peaceful, Kat π! (Thank gosh for Spring! π)
Everybody’s got different senses of humor, so I’m really glad to hear that Frankly in Love hit the spot for you! I think humor is especially important right now amidst all the craziness in the world π
And yes, I wasn’t sure what to expect with the new Jumanji because reboots can be a hit or miss sort of thing. But the actors are excellent and the entire cast just looks like they are having so much fun!
Anyways, I hope that you and your loved ones are able to stay healthy (both physically and mentally) in the upcoming month! Thanks so much, Belle! ππ
I’m shook when you DNF Frankly in Love. Lol
I love your honesty and your thorough reviews. Keep it up, Kat!
i’m so glad to see you loved tweet cute!! i read it in february and it was definitely a really cute and bingeable book π and ah sorry that you dnfed frankly in love! i was excited to read it but after seeing a lot of mixed reviews on it, i’m not looking forward to it as much haha
i hope you have a wonderful april, and i will watch anne with an e SOON for you!!
AH I’ve been dying to read tweet cute and I’ve been denied for that arc access sadly :( it sounds my favourite type of book. I’ve also been waiting forever to read to best the boys. I’m glad to hear you love both of them.
Stay safe!
Ah, your blogging voice is so amazing to read as always π I’m so glad that you loved Tweet Cute so much!! It was the perfect cute, fluffy, happy read, and I would like to eat every baked good in Pepper and Paige’s blog :(( I also love the way you described A Kingdom for a Stage, haha! That’s exactly how I feel about certain books: they weren’t bad, they weren’t good: they were just the definition of meh
Kat, I love visiting your blog — everything is so aesthetically pleasing and it makes it that more fun to read your wafflings πI spent my month of March quarantining and mostly reading, mostly trying not to procrastinate on homework, and only watching one movie. This month, I’m still aiming for mostly reading, trying not to procrastinate, but watching TWO movies, haha. I hope your April goes smoothly and stay healthy and safe!
My husband and I did the whole MCU movie series late last year. It took a while but by the end I was dreaming sounds of explosions in any background. We did enjoy it though! I had seen some sporadically and he had hardly seen any so they were all like new for us. There are quite a few different versions of what people think the order of watching should be though ;)
Ok I love your little icons to let people know what you thought of the book! So cute! haha
AH, I also read To Best the Boys in March, and it surprised me so much with how good it was!
Oh no, I’m so bummed you didn’t enjoy All the Salt and Sorrows! (But I also inhaled that book in one sitting, so that Dominoes analogy is weirdly accurate lol.) I also really enjoyed Seven Deadly Shadows! I still need to see the 2020 Little Women (and Emma, but I ain’t paying $20 to rent it).
‘to best the boys’ sounds SO GOOD KAT WHERE DO YOU FIND THESE GEMS?? im so HAPPY YOU ENJOYED TWEET CUTE AND THE FLATSHARE!!! tweet cute absolutely captured my heart, im so trash for ‘you’ve got mail’ retellings and adding food to the mix?? i love it with my whole heart. and yes flatshare is definitely worth losing sleep over. it was so well written i miss my baby leon so much πππ
little women absolutely deserves to be on the list of favourite movies. i love it so much (and yes ok maybe im still bitter about jo and laurie even if i can see the genius behind it) but im so glad you loved it tooo
hope you’re having an amazing month kat β€οΈβ€οΈ
Tweet Cute was super fun ! I re-watched the Jumanji movies back-to-back, and I did like the first one a little more than the second one, but it was still a good comedy / adventure movie π
Ahhh, Iron Man 2 is the one where Tony is a jerk for about 80% of the movie. It’s definitely one of my least faves of the MCU (with Guardians 2 and Ant-Man and the Wasp).
Haha that seems to be an accurate summary of the movie! I remember thinking, “Wow, Tony’s character arc has come a long way!”
Mickey Rourke and the cockatoo are the true heroes of that movie. (I also have no idea why they keep calling the cockatoo a parrot, or how it got to Russia in the first place because they are native Australian birds…)
Recently (and finally) watched the 2nd Jumanji too and those movies are rly fun, though I thst ending was rly wtf xD These posts of yours are so great to read, love your originality!
