Yo Ho, Yo Ho, A Pirate's Life For Me // Daughter of the Siren Queen by Tricia Levenseller

When you think about it, February is kind of a rip off. With a mere 28 days to its sorry name, this month feels as short as an Alaskan summer – there for a grand total of about three seconds, and gone again before you got the chance to fully enjoy it. Sure, if you look at it from a logistical standpoint, it’s only three days shorter than usual. But those three days might as well be three weeks for all the things we could have achieved in them. February just doesn’t peddle enough time for us to spend and it shows.

At least, it usually does.

This year was definitely the anomaly. Somehow, despite the there-and-gone-again nature of February, I was…actually…productive??? *Collective gasp from the Peanut Gallery* February is supposed to be the month that I lose all my New Year Resolution steam and fall short of my goals. BUT I DIDN’T!!!???? How is this even possible?

Actual footage of me trying to figure out how I was so productive this month.

American Panda // Gloria Chao // ★★★★½☆ – Listening to this audiobook made me cry. Like, actual tears. I’m not even using a hyperbole here. And seeing as I have a soul made of stone and hardly never cry when reading books, I’m feeling shooketh.

Illuminae // Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff // ★★★★½☆ – If I had to pick a theme song for this book, it would be that old 60s rock n’ roll song by Chubby Checker because it HAS SO MANY TWISTS! Seriously, I didn’t see any of them coming. None of them. How does Kristoff always manage to do this to me?

Come on baby! Let’s do the twist.

Not If I Save You First // Ally Carter // ★★★☆☆ – Ally Carter was always an insta-read author for me as an early teen. I adored her Gallagher Girls series when I was thirteen, and I’m sure if I had read Not If I Save You First back then, I would have loved it too. It has all the things mini-me would have flipped out over: a dude in distress (no helpless damsels here) and the extremelyyyyy slow burn that is the best-friends-to-haters-to-friends-again-to-lovers trope (yeah, that’s a thing). Honestly, this book is the perfect lower YA read, which is something we need more of.

The Way You Make Me Feel // Maurene Goo // ★★★★★ – I loved everything about this book. The relationships felt real, the writing style was engaging and authentic, and the fluffy story made my insides turn to cotton candy. I will definitely be picking up more of Goo’s books in the future.

Legend // Marie Lu // ★★★☆☆ – I tried reading Legend back when it first came out (multiple times, actually), but could ever bring myself to finish it. That being said, after devouring The Young Elite series (which I loved A LOT, btw), I figured I might as well give this book another go. This time, I was able to finish it (yay me!), but I still can’t say that I was overly impressed by Legend and its insta-lovey (is that even a word??), near-forced romance.

My So-Called Bollywood Life // Nisha Sharma // ★★★☆☆ – Wow. To describe My So-Called Bollywood Life in one word: DRAMA. Every little thing was The End of the World™ (!!!), but I think that was kind of the point. I loved how brightly the Indian culture shined in this book and now, if you would excuse me, I’m going to go watch some Bollywood movies on Netflix. Preferably ones with Shah Rukh Khan and a large irrelevant-to-the-plot dance number in them.

The Wicked King // Holly Black // ★★★★★ – This book is like a huge slice of cake; it’s probably not the healthiest thing for you, but boy, do you love it anyways. It’s totally a guilty pleasure. I read it almost entirely in one sitting and I’ve just got to say, THE ENDING SLAYED ME. I AM DEAD. I REPEAT: I. AM. DEAD. And I will stay dead until the next book comes out.

Me a million times over during this book.

P.S. I Still Love You // Jenny Han // ★★★★☆ – P.S. I Still Love You, along with To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, were such relaxing books for me. Reading them was like taking a hot bubble bath or getting a deep-tissue massage; it completely rejuvenated me and allowed me to destress. Also, unpopular opinion alert: I loved John Ambrose McClaren. So much. If I was Lara Jean, I would have picked him.

Want // Cindy Pon // ★★★☆☆ – This book made me realize that I haven’t read very many YA novels written from a male first-person POV. I found it quite refreshing.

The Bourne Identity // The Bourne Supremacy // The Bourne Ultimatum // I remember that one of my friends tried to get me to watch these movies in high school, but we never made it through the first one because I got too bored with it. WHAT WAS I EVEN THINKING??? I’m seriously questioning my high-school-self’s taste in movies, because that first one was actually really good. Especially that ending.

The Dragon Prince {Season 2} // Can I just say that I love what this show is doing for Disabled Rep in the Fantasy genre? In Season One, we were introduced to General Amaya, an amazing Deaf character who uses sign language. In Season Two, we meet Captain Villads, a blind sailor who captains a ship called, Ruthless. How amazing is that????

Ralph Breaks the Internet // This movie was wayyyyyy funnier than I was expecting it to be. Plus, the fact that all the Disney princesses made a cameo is EPIC.

I’m totally one of those adoring fans in the front row with all the hearts.

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Black Pearl // I wrote my review for Daughter of the Siren Queen this month (be on the lookout for that post in the upcoming weeks!), and it got me in such a mood for pirates. If we’re talking about pirates, there really is only one movie that will do. And it’s this one. (Okay, I lied. It’s this one and the 2003 Peter Pan movie with Jeremy Sumpter in it).

A Series of Unfortunate Events {Season 3} // WE FINALLY FIGURE OUT WHAT THE HECK IS IN THAT DANG SUGAR BOWL. My life is now complete.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse // I love living overseas, but I also don’t. One of the reasons I don’t is that I have to wait FOREVER to see my most anticipated movie releases. But let me tell you, all the hype for this movie is deserved a hundred times over. Thank goodness it won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.

Also, I think I might have possibly listened to Sunflower three hundred and forty-two times. Maybe I’m exaggerating. Maybe I’m not. Now we’ll never know.

  • Tracy @ Truffles Literary Wonders and I hosted the Blogiful Blog Design Event, and it actually went really well??? Thanks again to everybody who supported us and tuned in for all the fun event festivities :)
  • I officially opened my Blog Design Shop, called Waffley Cute Designs (because of course I had to include a waffle pun in there somewhere, right?). For those of you interested, I’m running a 10% off Grand Opening Sale for the month of March.
  • I took part in the Dreamer Blog Tour, hosted by Shut Up, Shealea’s Caffeine Book Tours.
  • I FINALLY reached 300 followers on Instagram! Gaining followers over there is like pulling teeth.

Are you participating in any reading challenges? If so, how are you doing with those?

Was February way too short for you? Or were you surprisingly productive, like me? I’d love to hear all about your month in the comments!

AHh your thoughts about The Wicked King are SO RELATABLE. Where is Queen of Nothing and why don’t I have it in my hands are the only things I’ve been asking since I finished TWK! I loved the Embassy Row series by Ally Carter (read it a few years back and adored) but I have to admit, Not If I save You First was just really boring to me! It just fell flat and the whole thing just did not work. I’m so glad you loved Ralph Breaks The Internet – I loved everything about it and the princesses cameos WERE the best and the ending was really heart-warming and heart-breaking!!

Oh I’d be so curious to read a full review of Want from you, if you ever decide to do one – or just tell me all about it, haha. I’m curious to see why you rated it 3 stars, I’ve heard so many fantastic things about it and I really want to give this book a try :)
I’m so, so happy that you did this blog event this month, I have learned so much thanks to your blog posts, this was such a great thing to do! <3

Looks like you had a really good month! I’ve heard so many good things about Maureen Goo, but I still haven’t read one of her novels (oops), she’s definitely on my never ending tbr.

I feel you so much about February being a ripoff … I needed these 3 days 😂 I’m glad to see that you liked Illuminae, because that book blew my mind, I read it in one sitting, because I couldn’t put it down again 😱 I also feel the same about Legend, I love all of Marie Lu’s other books, but her first Trilogy didn’t particularly impress me :/ The last book – Champion – is a lot better though! You’re also slaying it when it comes to YARC!! 😍

Obviously, as soon as I finished reading your post, I just had to turn on Let’s Twist Again. Honestly, thank God for the 60s.
I also read American Panda and The Way You Make Me Feel this 2019, and I was super pleased with both of them. I did almost cry with American Panda too – there was just a lot about the family relationships in that book that made me emotional. I’m so soft for families and mothers, so it’s not really a surprise it moved me to tears. I also adored The Way You Make Me Feel for all the summer vibes – it’s currently summer where I live, so it was incredibly fitting.
By the way, I want to say a lot of thank you’s for all the posts on blogging design this month! I’ve been brainstorming ideas to spice up my sidebar thanks to your tips, and hopefully I’ll have something until the end of March. So thanks again for all the inspiration and resources! 💛
Spiderman into the Spiderverse was truly phenomenal, and so was Wifi Ralph. It’s been a long time since I last watched animations, and these two just warmed my heart and reminded me everything there is to love about them!
    Wishing you a phenomenal March!

Great wrap up Kat! I’m glad you loved Wreck It Ralph 2 and watched the Bourne movies. I think they’re awesome action flicks. I do want to read Legend but I do admit that I’m not sure what I’ll think of it lol. It’s lower on my TBR for now. I hope this month is even better for you :D

I’m glad you had a productive month! I hope everything is going well with your blog design shop just opening up! I’m looking forward to seeing what you come up with :)

I’m glad you “yassed” over P.S. I Still Love You. I read To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before over the fall, but I haven’t picked up the rest of the series yet. I guess I’m afraid it won’t live up to my expectations? I’m also stoked to pick up Maurene Goo’s books as well as American Panda: all those are on my immediate TBR for Year of the Asian!

I hope you have a great March!

I’m taking part in YARC 2019 too! Do you know which book you’ll be reading for March? I hope to catch up on The Poppy War this month!

Your wrap up format is adorable! Honestly, take me in as your padawan hehe

I haven’t had time to watch much shows in February. But I did finish watching Elementary and WOW. It is an amazing, must watch show for those who enjoy Sherlock Holmes.

Your blog design series is life-saving! It’s got me considering changes to my blog, especially with my rating system.

I hope March is amazing for you! Thank you for sharing my post 💖💖💖

Great wrap up Kat! I just finished Into the Spiderverse yesterday and it was so vibrant I love it! I’m in the mood for Pirates rewatch, I plan to have it during this weekend. It’s been a while :)

I’m glad to hear you had such a good February! I also feel like I somehow managed to fit a lot into a small amount of time somehow?? I read MORE books than my average and had some London adventures.

You’ve got me curious about The Dragon Prince!

I’m so glad you had an awesome month! I also read Ally Carter when I was younger, but at some point I just outgrew her books. I still hold a special place in my heart for the Gallagher Girls and Heist Society series, but I also don’t plan on reading any more of her books.

Wasn’t Wreck It Ralph adorable? I went to see it with Chana and she was laughing at how excited I was at everything. But it’s just so cute!

I hope you have an awesome March!

I always kind of liked February having 28 days because it is exactly 4 weeks but that might just be me, haha!! Sounds like a good February with many books– you are doing extremely well for the YARC which is amazing!!
I felt the same with legend– it was just alright for me!!
OMG pirates of the caribbean takes me back– when I was younger I adored those movies– I had posters all around my room! You used to be able to see them from my window on google maps!! haha! And the spiderverse was such a good movie– I saw it really late as well (because life) but I loved it so much especially the bagel bit!! haha!!
    Have an amazing march!!

I can’t believe I’ve followed you for a while on Twitter and I have NEVER read any of your wrap ups? Or visited your blog, like ever??? Anyways, I AM LIVING FOR YOUR GRAPHICS!!!

To be honest, I came here to check if the Sunflower song you meant was the Spiderverse OST (because let’s be real, it’s the only really great, replay-worthy Sunflower song) and now I’m here anguishing about not yet watching Dragon Prince or ASoUE season 3 or Spiderverse.

The Wicked King was amazing! I loved it so much! I really hope Vivi plays a larger role in the next book, although she currently has her own problems to deal with. I re-read what Cardan said at the end over and over again looking for loopholes, or possible things she could exploit. There has to be something!

I’m pumped about the new Spider-Man movie, but haven’t had a chance to watch it yet. I’ve only heard good things!

  19. I love that you describe February as a rip-off. LOL! Glad you managed to be productive anyway. Sounds like you have lots of new things brewing, including your amazing design services!! Good luck with it!

    Great blog!

That sucks that you could never get into Legend. I started with that series first before going to Young Elites. Her next series (Warcross I believe) is much more like Young Elites if you’re interested. I actually met Marie Lu once. She’s super nice.
