There is an old adage that says, “There’s no better medicine than laughter,” (or maybe that’s Ibuprofen?). In any case, if laughter is a healing balm, then I AM ONE UNHEALTHY, BEDRIDDEN READER because after looking over my “Read” list in Goodreads, I realized something kind of sad: I don’t read that many funny, light-hearted books. All of them are about death, rebellion, war, murder, torture, etc, etc, etc. The perfect topics for polite persons to discuss over a charming, candlelit dinner for two, am I right? (I don’t know how my husband puts up with me haha).
5. Restart by Gordon Korman
4. Percy Jackson and the Olympians by Rick Riordan
- I Become Supreme Lord of the Bathroom
- I Play Dodgeball with Cannibal
- I Wrestle Santa’s Evil Twin
- A God Buys Us Cheeseburgers
- We Hitch a Ride with Dead Confederates
3. Brooding YA Hero: Becoming a Main Character (Almost) as Awesome as Me by Carrie Ann DiRisio
If you’re a female main character in a young adult novel, how do you know when you’ve met the love of your life?
Easy.
He’s described as appearing “about your age. Maybe a little bit older.”
2. The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks by E. Lockhart
1. My Lady Jane by Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton, & Jodi Meadows
First off, read the dedication of this book:
For everyone who knows there was enough room for Leonardo DiCaprio on that door.
And for England. We’re really sorry for what we’re about to do to your history.
Second off, this book has horse puns. Puns about horses. Yup.
There’s nothing more I need to say. Except maybe, READ THIS IF YOU HAVEN’T ALREADY.
Do you like to read books that make you laugh?
What are some of the funniest books you’ve read?
What do you think of my choices? Let me know in the comments!
Oh yeah every RR books will make you laugh for sure! I’ve heard Lady Jane is so funny, that book is on my TBR, I hope I could read it this month. Great picks Kat!!
Lady Jane is GREAT! I hope you get a chance to read it this month and that you love it as much as I did!
Thanks for your comments:)
I actually jus finished My Lady Jane, and it was great, I loved it so much!!! It’s totally worth every hype!!
I’m so glad you enjoyed it too!
[…] Novels and Waffles […]
I want to read it soon 💖💖
I hope you are able to read them soon :) Thanks for your comment!
One of the reasons why I love Rick Riordan’s books so much is because of the humour. When I first started his books I wasn’t expecting them to be so funny, he’s the king of mythology and comedy haha! Great list!! 😊
Exactly – Riordan’s is just so sarcastic in his books, and I love it. Have you read any of his other series, besides Percy Jackson?
I’ve read the Heroes of Olympus series and the first book in the Trials of Apollo. I feel like I’m so behind on all of his books at the moment haha!
I am too! I have no idea how he puts out so many books so quickly! TEACH ME YOUR WAYYYYYS, SIR.
My Lady Jane made my list as well! And one of these days I need to get to the Percy Jackson series so badly! I’ve read the chapter headings and laughed so hard so I can only imagine what the actual book is like!
Thanks for participating – added you to the list :)
You haven’t read Percy Jackson yet????? *GASPS* But then again, I haven’t read LOTR and some people might say that’s an unpardonable sin. That’s what happens when your TBR list is as tall as the Eiffel Tower. :) Thanks for always putting Top 5 Tuesday together! You are awesome for running it every week!
That’s exactly my problem. TBR is just too big and not enough time in a day. But I have read LOTR so does that make us even?? 😂
Lovely post! I totally agree with Percy Jackson!
Thank you so much! Yeah, it seems a lot of people agree about Percy.
Omg yes the Percy Jackson books always had me in stitches!
SERIOUSLY THOUGH, AM I RIGHT? Percy is such a little sassy pants.

I have to say I am probably like you I tend to read books involving deadly quests and war. I need to branch out more really. And you have given me 5 more books to add to my TBR and I love the brooding YA hero’s Twitter as well- absolutely golden 😂
I love she’s the man as well- easily one of the funniest films 😂 and you have reminded me that I need to watch it again soon.
Loved this post!!
I’m glad that you also like both Brooding YA Hero and She’s the Man. It seems like we have a similar sense of humor :D
Thanks so much for your great comment! <3
Yay!! Haha 😂 You’re welcome 💛
The Percy Jackson series are my go-to feel good books! I always read them when I need a good laugh. Lovely list! ❤️
Thanks so much, Kelly! Yeah, they are just great, aren’t they? Have you read any of Rick Riordan’s other series?
I’ve read his Heroes of Olympus Series and Kane Chronicles trilogy. I unfortunately thought they couldn’t live up to the Percy Jackson series, but were still enjoyable nonetheless! :)
Agreed! I haven’t enjoyed anything that’s he’s written nearly as much as Percy Jackson, but they are still light and fun, like you said.
Lovely list! <3 it's so sweet that you and your husband are reading books together!
I loved Frankie-Landau Banks, such a fun book, it made me laugh a lot, and same for My Lady Jane, such a fun and quick read overall :D
I’m glad that you’ve read Frankie-Landau Banks – I feel like nobody really talks about it, but it was so great! Thanks for always being so supportive, Marie!
It really was! <3
You're so, so welcome :)
First, I love She’s the Man. And now I’m reminded that I miss Amanda Bynes :(
Second, I love The Disreputable History of Frankie-Landau Banks! It’s so underrated and a book I think more girls should read in high school. Yes for female empowerment. Woah, is there a theme emerging here? :)
Third, I’ve seen My Lady Jane pop up on a couple of these lists today so I’m taking that as a sign that I need to go ahead and read this book.
READ MY LADY JANE. DOoooOoOOooOoO it. Also, YESH. I always love to find other Amanda Bynes fans. She was just so great in She’s The Man, but then sort of…faded. The last thing she was in was Easy A, and that was in 2010…
Bwahahaha I so love your introduction to this post! And yes you have a fantastic list there even for a bedridden reader ;-)
Thanks soooooo much! I really had to think hard to reach the five books though…derp. I read Frankie Landau-Banks back in 2011….so yeah.
I put Percy Jackson on my list as well! The books in that series are so snarky and fun. Loved your list!
Seriously, aren’t they just the most sarcastic things ever? Percy is my spirit animal.
Percy Jackson is super funny! I love it so much! he is so sassy XD and I haven’t read the rest :/ but Highly Illogical Behavior (review on my blog) it is super funny! you have no idea!
ps: Kat… why I wasn’t following you on Instagram? OMG I just checked and I had a fangirl moment I love LOVE YOUR ACCOUNT!!
WOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOW. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!! It means a lot to me that you would check out my insta. And that you would like it! I’m actually about to switch up my theme on Instagram soon, so I hope you will still like the new content!
This made my day :D
Awww really?? I swear that it it is as good as you have done so far I will still be in love with the content!! If you got a lot of notifications haha that was me :3
I also tend to gravitate towards darker, soul-ripping books and need to read more funny books. This is a great list!
I don’t have a lot of funny books either! 😬 aside from PJO I have literally NOTHING?? I do really want to read Broddong YA hero though! I only realised it was a book a few weeks ago, when I saw it in a bookstore. I was going to buy it, but the dust jacket was ripped and they only had that copy left. I was so disappointed 😩
I LOVED Percy Jackson and Restart! My friend and I now have lists of people we’d like to throw some fro-yo at. It was a wonderful book, and I think I’ll have to read some of the other ones you listed!
I love your blog so much!!! I read Percy Jackson this year and I really enjoyed it. I grew up with Harry Potter instead of this series, but I wish this series was part of my childhood too. Great post!
*cried great big tears of joy* Thank you for saying that! Ooooh I love HP too :) I honestly didn’t read Percy Jackson until High school, I think? Does that still count as childhood? I don’t even know haha.
Ah I love this post as I’m all here for funny books 😍 I love so many of your choices too! Rick Riordan is always guranteed to make me laugh with any of his book, but especially the Magnus Chase Trilogy :D My Lady Jane also surprised me by how funny, witty and well written it was 💕
I tried to read the Magnus Chase trilogy, but the first book kind of felt too much like a cut-and-paste Percy Jackson novel. Do they get better as the series progresses, do you think?
I definitely like all the books in the Series and the second book introduces a character I really like :)
I do remember Rick Riordan always being a great writer for humour! Love your cute blog, it’s gorgeous and the graphics are so cute! Do you design them yourself?
Oh goodness, thank you thank you THANK YOU. That means a lot to me. I’m a huge perfectionist when it comes to my blog – it’s kind of my second child haha.
I get all my graphics from freepik but then change the colors and put it all together how I like it in Photoshop and Illustrator.
Haha I feel the same about mine!! It took me months to finally get it up and running 😂 and nice!! That’s so cute!! Illustrator is my bae as a design student 😊
I’m honestly still trying to figure out my way around it. I’ve got photoshop down, but Illustrator is more difficult. Any tips on some good online tutorials that might help me parse through it?
I’m the complete opposite! I don’t know photoshop very well, but I know illustrator and indesign off the back of my hand. I couldn’t tell you because I learnt by making logos and graphics off it, there are plenty of tutorials on YouTube that are good though I’m sure :) my tip is to use the keyboard shortcuts, when I learnt those I was working twice as fast!
Thanks for the tip! I’ll have to just play around with it when I have some time (aka…NEVER cause who has extra time? Not me *sobs)
ughh ikr!!! I want more extra time too, I was super low on time today it’s depressing D:
Ooo an interesting selection.
May I add David Sedaris ‘Me Talk Pretty One day’ ?
x
Oh I love funny books!!! I have My Lady Jane so I should get to it!! I thought Denton Little’s Deathdate was pretty funny. Love your blog and also i made me hungry lol!!!
Thanks so much, Grace! It really means a lot that you would say that :)
Hello! *waves* I’m new to your blog, but gah, I love it so much! It has so much flair and character! As for your post, the only book I’ve read here is the Lightning Thief and I remember laughing through the whole thing as a kid. I really need to get around to reading My Lady Jane!
~ Aimal @ Bookshelves & Paperbacks
Oh gosh, thank you SO SO much for saying that! <3 It means a lot to me, especially since I was just admiring your cute blog the other day! And yes, My Lady Jane is one of my favorites! I would totally recommend it :)
Hi Kat! I love the books you chose for your list — especially the Percy Jackson series. Rick Riordan’s books were one of the rare ones that actually made me laugh out loud when I read them as a kid. And it’s so nice that you have someone to buddy-read books with! Having someone to discuss in real time all your thoughts on a book is so fun and I should definitely do it more 😊 Great post!
Thank Zoie for you wonderful comment! And yeah, I agree! Having someone to discuss a book with is so much fun! That’s one of the reasons I started book blogging. But it’s even better when it’s real time, like you said, and not just over the internet.
Percy Jackson is a favorite! Read the whole series this year and absolutely loved it. Especially the chapter titles.
Seriously, aren’t they just SO FUNNY? Percy will forever be one of my favorite characters. He’s so likable and sassy.
Me too!
