A Story That Doesn't Piece Together // A Thousand Pieces of You by Claudia Gray

Good dawning to thee, my bookish friends! I hope that you all had a great weekend full of wonders and magic :) What is that? Magic isn’t real, you say? I would hate to contradict you, but I’m going to contradict you.

It is my firm belief that magic is everywhere, though it might not manifest itself exactly like it does in books. Your weekend might not have been full of elderly mages dressed in dusty cloaks and floppy-brimmed hats (well, maybe it was, what do I know?). But instead, maybe you hung out with a friend and laughed as you watched Netflix and ate popcorn together. Maybe you visited a loved one and or went to a rock concert or simply smiled and read a book while you curled up in bed. Are friends not magic? Laughter? Loved ones? Music? Books? Smiles? I think magic is everywhere – that often it is hidden in the things that we take for granted. But it’s there, if you look for it.

Okay, enough of my metaphysical, self-help drivel and on to the actual important stuff. I was tagged for this one by the wonderfully amazing Kelly from Another Book in the Wall, who has to be one of the sweetest beings to walk the planet. Thanks for the tag, Kelly! If you haven’t checked out her blog before, drop whatever you’re doing (unless what you are doing involves a small child) and go check it out! Her blog is so cute and her posts are full of awesome content! I especially love her “Let’s Talk About…” series, where she discusses all sort of bookish things :)

A Library Book

This book comes highly recommended by a few of my favorite bloggers and Goodread reviewers. Sadly, the ebook from my library just expired without me getting a chance to read it. 😭 Bawling 😭 Crying 😭 Sad Tears 😭 Sobbing

A Book You Got As A Gift

When my Mother-in-Law came to visit us last year, she brought this book on the plane with her to read. She finished it in a flash (that woman reads as fast as a cheetah on a treadmill, I swear! It’s like her superpower or something…Can you just imagine? “It’s a bird, it’s a plane, no it’s The SPEED READER!” …. okay I’m done) and then she gifted it to me. I still haven’t read it though…#awkward.

A Childhood Book

This 👏 book 👏 changed 👏 my 👏 life.

A Magical Book

The Girl Who Drank the Moon is about a witch who accidentally feeds a baby girl a keg of moonlight (don’t worry, moonlight is apparently quite healthy for babies)! Don’t go thinking that a glass of moonlight after dinner will help prevent Type 2 Diabetes though, because the side effects include magic.

A Romantic Book

“I know only two things well: the opening theme song to Sailor Moon, and books.” ~Ashley Poston (via her website’s About Page, which is hilarious btw. Go read it.)

What would happen if Cinderella loved to watch Star Trek, read Star Wars fan fiction, cosplayed Arwen from Lord of the Rings, went to Comic Cons, and wrote a fangirl blog? Well, that’s exactly what you’re going to find out in this nerdtastic book!

A Steamy Book

Can we all just agree that Laini Taylor is a goddess? I mean, who didn’t get goosebumps over Karou and Akiva? Show of hands. I hope nobody put their hand up, because they would be lying.

An Old Book

This book is the Romeo and Juliet of Japan. Or maybe it’s more like The Odyssey.  I don’t really know which comparison is better, but in any case, it is the most famous Japanese work of fiction of all time. Hands down. Oh, and it’s written by a woman. Bonus points.

A Book That Makes You Happy And/Or Laugh

The Lunar Chronicles is full of characters who I love like my own flesh and blood. THEY ARE MY BABIES. Seeing them all end up happy makes my heart melt like ice cream. Yes, I have an ice cream heart. It is Very Berry Strawberry. Deal with it.

A Book That Makes You Emotional

I’m not crying, you’re crying.

A Book Whose Ending You Dislike

I’m not going to say anything, in case there are still people out there in this world who have not read this series. But for those of you who have, COMMISERATE WITH ME.

A Book You Wish Had Illustrations

The book was so dang atmospheric! I loved how whimsical it felt. It totally felt like a Grimm fairy tale or something (but with less dismemberment, because goodness, Grimm fairy tales are, well, sorta grim). And as we all know, fairy tales should always be illustrated. It’s like…an unwritten rule.

A Book Or Genre You Love To Read On A Rainy Day

What better way to spend a rainy day than by flying off to Neverland? Honestly, this book has it all. There’s pirates and mermaids. Indians and fairies. Magic and adventure. And of course, there’s no growing up. It’s a great way to pretend that I don’t have to be an adult and shirk all my responsibilities. #adultingishard

Disclaimer: I live abroad and move around a lot. As such, I do not have many physical books or even a real bookshelf to put said few books on (What’s that? You hear cracking? Oh, that’s just the sound of my heart splitting in two. NBD). So anyway, I modified this tag a bit to fit my circumstances better, thus the KINDLE instead of the BOOKSHELF.

I Tag…

Thanks for reading! If you haven’t done this tag yet, I also tag you!

Great answers! Ooh an illustrated edition of The Winternight trilogy would be magical, I’d buy them all in a heartbeat! The Girl Who Drank the Moon is a beautiful story, I wish more people would read the book!

I’m glad you agree with my illustrated novel choice! In all honesty, I wish more novels were illustrated because um, BEAUTIFUL PICTURES. Plus, there are just so many artists out there that need more opportunities to showcase their wonderful artwork. Thanks for the lovely comment :)

Lovely answers for this tag, Kat :) I’m so sad you didn’t get to read Ava Lavender, I would have loved to hear your thoughts about that one. I’m really excited to read it, too, it’s been on my TBR for ages and I hope I can get around to it soon :)

    • Kat @ Novels & Waffles October 23, 2018 at 2:11 am - Reply

Thanks so much! Yeah, I was disappointed too. Too many books, not enough time. Oh my gosh AVA LAVENDER SHOULD BE THE BOOK WE BUDDY READ TOGETHER. Eventually. When we finally get around to it. Maybe next year, at the pace we are going hahaha. Keep being awesome, Marie :)

This is such a fun tag! I really want to pick up Geekerella as well, I love a good retelling.

    • Kat @ Novels & Waffles October 23, 2018 at 2:18 am - Reply

It was definitely a cute, fun read! There was so much personality and it definitely made it stand out from some other Cinderella retellings. If you ever get around to reading it, let me know your thoughts :)

This tag looked like so much fun! 😄💕I’ve been meaning to read The Bear & The Nightingale + Ava Lavander (I’ve heard such amazing things about it) They are on my list of never-ending TBR books 😂📚

Mockingjay is the book whose ending I’m most in denial about. I genuinely sometimes forget that the Things that happened in it actually happened. There are characters my subconscious has tricked me into believing are still alive.

Haha seriously, right? It’s like, “I just started to like you. THEN BAM!!!! Dead.” WHY U DO THAT AUTHOR????

oh my god it’s sully, I haven’t seen this book mentioned since December 2017 when I ///received it as a gift/// because OMG WE ALL GET IT AS A GIFT XD
I didn’t really like it but i didn’t want to hurt my mom’s feelings, so I read the entire thing. good ol’ sully.
Also, I need to read Daughter fo Smoke of Bone again, it deserves another chance, I think I dnf page 1? which is an entirely new definition of failing klsdfjlsdkjdfkls

BWAHAHAHAHAHA. The comment about Sully had me crying cause #accurate. Also, DNF at PAGE 1?????? YOU’RE KIDDING RIGHT???? Hahaha, I know what you mean though, sometimes with books I’m like, “Do I even want to try? NOPEEEEE.”

Lovely answers, Kat :) Wonder definitely made me emotional. Have you watched the movie yet? I shed loads of tears.
Geekerella is on my TBR for so long now. I really hope to pick it up soon :)

    • Kat @ Novels & Waffles October 26, 2018 at 10:10 pm - Reply

I have watched the movie, and thought it was pretty well done. Geekerella is a fun, light read, so if you’re looking for something like that, I would say go for it.

oh we have so many books in common! I also want to read Ava Lavender and The girl who Drank the Moon (love Magical Realism!)) so badly! Ava Lavender also expired on me TWICE *sobs* why can’t I live in parallel universes so i can read many books at the same time! I feel in love with Laini Taylor’s writing with DoSaB

    • Kat @ Novels & Waffles October 27, 2018 at 3:30 am - Reply

I UNDERSTAND. I wish I could read more that one book at the same time too! That or that I would never need to sleep so that I could finally write that book I always wanted to but never have time for. Sigh. haha.

I loved reading your answers, Kat – what a fun tag! Also I swear that every time I visit you aesthetic/design gets better and better.

😭😭😭Thanks, Kaleena! That means a lot. I think I spend more time on how my blog looks than on what I actually write, derp. I have a problem.

Ava Lavender is a beautiful but really difficult read (ALL the trigger warnings, seriously) so I can see why you would put that one off. If I’d known what I was getting myself into I don’t think I would have jumped in as happily as I did. Don’t get me wrong – the writing is really spectacular and if you’re into magical realism it is a really gorgeous example of that… but also totally crushing and devastating.

Oooh The Bear and the Nightingale looks like the perfect read for the freezing weather we’re having in the UK right now. There is something about winter that just makes me want to curl up with something magical :)

It’s got bloodthirsty pirates, jealous fae, kidnapped princesses, pixie-induced aerobatics, and a magical found family with some serious #squadgoals. As somebody who sometimes constantly struggles with adulting, the idea of never growing up, of never having to worry about adulty things like paying the water bill or filing my taxes, sounds utterly delightful.
