When All is Read and Done // October 2018 Wrap-Up
A Sticky Situation: Mini Reviews for Pride and Daughter of the Pirate King
Published On: November 5, 2018Categories: Awards41 Comments

Well, good morning and salutations to all of you bookish fiends out there! Want to hear a joke? Yes, of course you do. Everybody loves jokes, just like everybody loves cake (QUICK – NAME THAT MOVIE).

Wait, what’s that? You don’t want to hear a joke? …. Then go directly to jail. Do not pass Go. Do not collect 200 dollars.

Well I’m going to tell it to you anyways, because everybody deserves a smile:  Where do waffles go on vacation? Does anybody know the answer? Do I see any hands? No? Then let me tell you the answer: Sandy Eggo.

Don’t give me that face. You know you thought it was funny.

Okay, I’m done. I got that out of my system. I love you guys a waffle lot  an awful lot (*ducks as tomatoes are thrown in my direction*) for putting up with my crazy antics. Yeah and I’ll admit it – that was a pretty lame joke. BUT I hope it brought a little sunshine into your wonderful November day because that’s what this post is all about: HAPPINESS AND RAINBOWS AND UNICORNS ANNNNNNDDDD THE SUNSHINE BLOGGER AWARD.

This is the first Award I’ve ever been tagged for, so I’m pretty excited about it. I mean, The Sunshine Blogger Award is an award for bloggers that inspire positivity and joy, so that’s pretty dang cool. I’m really touched that anybody would think that my blog is even a teeny-weeny bit worthy of that. So, a great, big shoutout to Camilla @ The Reader in the Attic for nominating me. *Blows thank-you kisses*  So…I guess it’s time to start. C’mon everybody! Here we goOoOOOoooooo!

Rules for the award:

  • Thank the blogger who nominated you in a blog post and link back to their blog.
  • Answer the 11 questions the blogger asked you.
  • Nominate (at least) 11 new blogs to receive the award and write them 11 new questions.
  • List the rules

Is there some kind of event short story you heard about from in real life people who you think deserve a novel adaptation? Or take inspiration for a book?

Honestly, I don’t follow the news very much because there is just so much depressing stuff happening around the world, but the first thing that came to mind is the Wild Boars Cave rescue in Thailand. That is such an amazing and miraculous story. Apparently, many other people thought so too, because it looks like there is already a book being written about it.

Name a representation that you still have to read about in the books you’ve found on your path and you really want to see.

I personally would love to see more Mental Illness representation, especially in the YA Fantasy genre. Although Contemporary literature is really making progress in this respect, I don’t feel like Fantasy is as much. I’ve talked a lot about this recently so I will just leave it at that.

Is there any smell that you associate with books? Something like coffee or even a flower?

The smell I associate with books is the smell of books. Okay, take two. Maybe I would say maple syrup because I love to read and eat waffles at the same time? There is nothing better than a good book and breakfast in bed, if you ask me.

If somebody wrote a novel about you, how do you think it would be named?

The Girl Who Makes Horrible Puns.

Is there some book you would also love to play as a video game, with fighting and possible multiple choices for see how the story goes?

Oh gosh, I haven’t played a video game in sooooooo long (I HAVE NO TIME MY FRIENDS, NO TIME…Oh and money. I don’t have too much of that either)…But it would be cool to have a huge online, multiplayer Lunar Chronicles-based game where you could make your own Fairy Tale-inspired avatar. TLC world is just so vast and well developed, I think there is a lot of potential for interesting story arcs. AND IF I’M HONEST, I JUST NEED MORE LUNAR CHRONICLES. I love those books to the moon and back (haha, do you see what I did there? Please see my answer to the above question) and would read Marissa Meyer’s grocery list if she let me.

Since autumn is coming, which drinks are you going to drink the most while reading?

Okay, most boring answer ever, but I’m going to have to say WATER. Reason #1 being that I never drink enough of it and am dehydrated like 95% of the time. Reason #2 being that I just don’t really like juices or teas or things like that. Sorry I’m lame.

There’s any outfits or style you read in a book that you would like to wear yourself?

In Caraval, Scarlett received a magic dress from Legend that changed shape based on her mood or the time of day. That would be pretty sweet because then I wouldn’t have to ever have to waste time changing into my PJs – THE DRESS WOULD JUST KNOW AND CHANGE SHAPE FOR ME. I’m all about laziness  being efficient.

Is there some underrated book you really love and needs to be promoted more? And with underrated I mean books that you name and people are like “what never heard of it.”

Honestly, all my most recent reads are books that have been released very recently and are getting lots of exposure. Derp, maybe I need to fix that. But anyways, a book that I think needs to be promoted more is Across the Nightingale Floor by Lian HernThis book accurately captured the overall feeling of Japan and it was Christmas-morning-great to see an author who GOT IT RIGHT. As somebody who lives in Japan and majored in Japanese, I’m kind of picky about Japanese representation, which maybe I have no right to be since I’m not even Japanese…but still.

Is there any particular type of little candy that you love? Something typical of your zone. In case you prefer savory food, answer with that.

I’m not a big fan of candy, BUT I LOVE BAKED GOODS. Give me a slice of cake over a Snickers bar any day. In Japan, they have these little cream-filled pastries that are baked in the shape of a fish called, taiyaki. THEY ARE MY FAVORITE THINGS. EVER. HANDS DOWN. I might even like them more than waffles, which is saying something (I mean, just look at my blog header haha). But, “Novels & Taiyaki,” just doesn’t have the same ring to it, am I right?

Why are they in the shape of a fish? Nobody knows. Seriously. Nobody.

Do you have a background when you blog? Something like a chat, a tv series, music.

I get wayyyyyy too distracted when I’m blogging. *OH LOOK A BUTTERFLY* Haha…but seriously though. I try to keep it as quiet as possible when I blog, to help me go all zen and focused. Maybe this is also a side effect of having a loud and rambunctious one-year-old. It’s usually noisy when he’s awake, so when he is asleep (which is when I do the majority of my blogging), I like it to be quiet.

Still on blogging, did you noticed a pattern that helps you work. Like some kind of “blogging ritual?”

Ummmmmm….Not really? Maybe I should start doing the haka or something before I start writing, to get me all pumped up.

My Questions (Sorry if they’re lame):

  1. Okay, most important question first: WAFFLES OR PANCAKES?
  2. Who is your favorite Disney Princess?
  3. Who is your favorite Disney Villain?
  4. What is your favorite Disney movie? (Okay last question about Disney, I swear!)
  5. What is your Hogwarts house?
  6. What is your patronus?
  7. What is the punniest joke you can think of?
  8. If you could have any superpower, what would it be?
  9. Who is your book doppelganger (a character in a book who is most like you)?
  10. How do you feel about audiobooks?
  11. Here’s one for the philosophy books: Is a hotdog a sandwich?

Now for my nominations! I’m sure a lot of the people I’m going to nominate have been tagged in this a million times, so please don’t feel the need to complete this Award again. BUT – I want you all to know that you really are A LITTLE RAY OF SUNSHINE IN THIS GREAT BIG BLOGGING WORLD.  You inspire positivity and joy. Let that sink in – You are a positivity-inspirer. Go add that to your resume ;)

What is something that makes you happy?
Who are some bloggers that inspire you?

Um, The Girl Who Makes The Best Puns, more like. I LOVE puns and I will defend them until my dying day. They are such an innocent form of entertainment!! Also, I would totally read a blog called Novels & Taiyaki, just for the record, if you ever decide to rebrand ;)

    • Kat @ Novels & Waffles November 8, 2018 at 4:38 pm - Reply

YOU LIKE MY JOKESSS????? ARE NOW MY BEST FRIEND. Seriously Erin, this comment made me smile a big, goofy smile! It melted my heart – thanks for all of your kind words. And gosh yes, let’s start a club and call it The Pun Defenders.

  6. Becky (Blogs of a Bookaholic) November 6, 2018 at 3:15 am - Reply

I would like to read The Girl Who Makes Horrible Puns. That sounds like a good book!

What book you’d like to play as a video game is an interesting one! I think I’d say Throne of Glass. I used to love games with rich fantasy worlds and lots of sword fighting when I was younger. Plus, it would be fun to incinerate people. :D

    • Kat @ Novels & Waffles November 8, 2018 at 4:41 pm - Reply

Hahaha I’m glad you think it sounds like a good book! And I’ve never read Throne of Glass *gasp* I know, what kind of YA book blogger am I? But from what I know about it, I’m sure it would make an excellent video game!

  7. nsfordwriter November 6, 2018 at 6:14 am - Reply

Really fun post! *waves* new follower here :)
So cool that you live in Japan.

    • Kat @ Novels & Waffles November 8, 2018 at 5:03 pm - Reply

Thanks so much for reading! It means so much that you would say that! It’s an adventure everyday living in Japan, that’s for sure. I think the best part is definitely the food, haha.

      • nsfordwriter November 9, 2018 at 2:13 am - Reply

I’m really not a good traveller, I’m more of an armchair traveller. Would be interested to hear more of what it’s like to live in Japan :)

        • Kat @ Novels & Waffles November 9, 2018 at 8:12 pm - Reply

Traveling is hard, so I definitely understand! If you ever have any specific questions about Japan, just let me know!

  8. Rose November 6, 2018 at 6:33 am - Reply

I LOVED the idea of Scarlett’s dress as well! I really want something similar to that – I’d never have to change or buy new clothes ever again! 😂

Thank you so much for nominating me, I’m really looking forward to answering your questions! 💜

    • Kat @ Novels & Waffles November 8, 2018 at 5:05 pm - Reply

You’re welcome, Rose! I hope the questions aren’t too boring – I’m super horrible at thinking up questions and the like. And oh my gosh yes, I never even thought about all the money I could save by not buying clothes. I COULD USE THAT MONEY AND BUY MORE BOOKS INSTEAD. My desire for this dress to be real just intensified tenfold.

      • Rose November 9, 2018 at 6:20 am - Reply

        Your questions are great!!
Getting more books sounds like a perfect plan – if only the dress really did exist!

Loved all of your answers, Kat :) And yes, that joke was totally lame but it made me smile so mission accomplished? :P The story of that cave rescue was really inspiring and I happy to know that they are writing a book on it. I haven’t read TLC series but I guess giving the descriptions and popularity, that game would be awesome :D

    • Kat @ Novels & Waffles November 8, 2018 at 5:38 pm - Reply

Thanks so much! I’m glad that my horrible joke made you smile! And yeah, TLC is one of my favorite series, so I would just love anything to do with it, honestly.

  10. Hunida November 6, 2018 at 6:30 pm - Reply

Caraval has been on my TBR for awhile. That mood-changing dress would be a dream!

    • Kat @ Novels & Waffles November 8, 2018 at 5:45 pm - Reply

Caraval was definitely an interesting read. Some aspects of it didn’t really work for me, but I still enjoyed it for the unique setting. And the dress, haha. Thanks for the comment :)

As always, your graphic is on point 👌 I would love to have that changing dress, imagine not having to choose for clothes anymore, you just have to think and feel how do you want to look that day! Also, HELLOOOO fellow Across the Nightingale Floor reader! This is the first time I’ve seen anyone who read the series too so pardon the excitement!!!

    • Kat @ Novels & Waffles November 8, 2018 at 8:27 pm - Reply

THANKS SO MUCH, TASYA! AND WOAH somebody else has read ATNF??? I AM SQUEEELING HERE. I feel like it is such a diverse and rich story, but doesn’t get talked about at all. Have you read any of the sequels at all?

      • tasya @ the literary huntress November 12, 2018 at 12:41 am - Reply

I think I’ve read until Heaven’s Net, but I haven’t keep up with the series for years!

        • Kat @ Novels & Waffles November 13, 2018 at 7:37 pm - Reply

Haha I know what you mean. I read the first one, loved it, but for some reason never made it to the next?

  13. Kat Impossible November 9, 2018 at 5:12 am - Reply

Thank you so much for thinking of me for this, but I really have been tagged for it a lot. Still, I enjoyed reading your answers so much and the fact that you called all of us a ray of sunshine made my day brighter. Really – thank you! <3

    • Kat @ Novels & Waffles November 9, 2018 at 8:15 pm - Reply

Don’t worry at all about doing the tag, of course! I wouldn’t have bothered tagging people if it weren’t for the fact that I thought it would be nice to say a little “thank you” to some of the people in the community that have been welcoming and kind to me! Anyways, I hope you have a great day, Kat AKA My Name Twin :)

I LOVE your blog! I love everything about it from the way it looks, your blogs name, and your graphics – they’re all super cute! Waffles are just amazing 😍
I love getting to know bloggers from these kinds of posts. We have so much in common, aside from just loving waffles, haha! I also make extremely bad puns. The worse they are, the better they are! The same about jokes, which yours really made me smile!
I also agree with you about wanting more representation about mental illness in books, especially fantasy. As someone with a mental illness and who adores fantasy books, seeing that kind of representation would be amazing.
Loved this post and love your blog!

    • Kat @ Novels & Waffles November 13, 2018 at 7:33 pm - Reply

OH MY GOODNESS, KELLY! THANK YOU! This comment really meant so much to me! I’m glad to hear that you like my blog, but more importantly THAT YOU LIKE HORRIBLE PUNS. You’re completely right – the worse they are, the more funny I think they are (but don’t tell my husband that. He makes horrible puns all the time, and I actively have to appear unamused or else he will start getting a big head haha). Anyways, thanks again for your lovely comment!

  15. Evelina @ AvalinahsBooks November 11, 2018 at 9:39 pm - Reply

Thank you for tagging me! I laughed at all the puns so much (I live in a house where we really appreciate a good pun). Also, I remember I used to get really bristly about stupid Western stereotypes about Japan back when I was studying Japanese and was more immersed in the culture. I can so relate to the rep thing. It really does make sense, even if you’re not Japanese. the amount of stereotypes out there is unbelievable. Also, I don’t know if you run into this, but… I used to get borderline violent when l’d mention I speak Japanese and people did that stupid Chinese sounding impression. Seriously, I see red when they do that. Makes me want to punch holes in walls!

    But anyway :D

Actually , I think I’ll go with my moms’ crepes cause they’re special. You see, waffles are not much of a thing here and I didn’t really start having them before my 20s cause the electric waffle irons weren’t available. It remains a very foreign thing to me. That said, we don’t do fluffy pancakes here either.

Same about Disney. Not much of that growing up:) But I am in Hufflepuff, so at least I can answer that pop culture question:D my paternus… Actually, I don’t remember, did a test once, but I think my spirit animal is a cat :D as for puns, I can’t think of one right now, but they’re a regular appearance in our house!

And if I could have a superpower, it would be wielding the power of ther in my hands. Lightning! I used to dream about that alot, it was great fun. But… Well, flying or reading minds could also be fun.

Can’t think of a book doppelganger right now, but do you know Amy Santiago from the show Brooklyn 99? That is me :D

I also listen to books a lot, although not audiobooks. I just use text to speech on a really fast setting. Audiobooks would probably be fine too, but you need to buy them, lol..

And as you probably already expected me to say… Hot dogs are also not much of a thing here. Sandwiches are also not what you think of as sandwiches. So a hot dog would not qualify as a sandwich here XD (a sandwich here is a slice of black bread – legit dark chocolate color, you probably don’t know what that is – plus butter, plus sausage, the german kind. I don’t like them. Ick.)

ええええええ!??日本語を勉強したか。I didn’t know that you studied Japanese! I’m sure you mentioned it somewhere before on your blog, but I must have missed it. AND OH MY GOSH YES. That used to happen all the time when I was in high school! People would be like, “So, what language are you studying?” And then I would be like, “Japanese.” And for some reason they would all reply with some weird slosh of nonsense that I suppose sounded Japanese to them….and I was like, “That’s not what Japanese sounds like.” Luckily, I haven’t encountered that in a long time.

Thank you so much for sharing your answers! I loved reading about them! Sorry my reply to your wonderful comment is so late – somehow it got stuck in my spam box and I had to go revive it haha. I hope you have a wonderful day, Evelina!

Thanks so much for nominating me, I’m already looking forwards to answering your questions because I LOVE Disney, and I love Harry Potter so it’s like they were written for me! :D
I loved reading your answers for your questions, a Lunar Chronicles game would be incredible. I agree it’s such a well developed world there’s plenty we could explore in a game right? Also I’m a baked goods over candy person too, I’ve never tried taiyaki but my favourites are gingerbread men and chimney cakes. I could die happy eating either of those two!
Great post, and again thanks for the tag. :) <3
