In case you haven’t noticed, I like breakfast food. Like, a lot. Well, duh Kat. I mean, just look at your blog. You take this whole “waffle theme” to a new level. In any case, when my dear friend Becky @ Blogs of a Bookaholic created The Pancake Book Tag …welp, I kind of had an Abu-and-the-Forbidden-Treasure situation going on; I just couldn’t help it. I HAD to nab it for myself. This tag was like … beckoning to my breakfast-loving soul.

I’ve gotta include my gratuitous Disney reference in this post somehow, amirite?

And although when it comes to the age-old pancakes versus waffles debate, I would gladly die on my waffle hill ( I MEAN, COME ON! Waffles have little pockets to hold all that delicious melted butter and mouth-watering syrup!) that doesn’t necessarily mean I don’t love pancakes too. In fact, give me some good ol’ fluffy-as-a-freaking-cloud buttermilk pancakes any day, and I’ll give you one very happy Kat.

But enough with my wafflings about thieving animal sidekicks and cumulonimbus cakes – let’s move onto the part you all came here for! THE TAG!

PREPARE YOURSELVES FOR PANCAKES GALORE!

The Rules:

  • Link back to the original creator in your post
  • Feel free to use any of Becky’s wonderful pancake graphics in your post (I know I did), or create your own!
  • Tag 5 other people at the end of your post, and let them know you’ve tagged them. 🙂

Let’s Eat Some Pancakes

Gosh, this book is THE QUEEN of purple prose (Hahaha get it? Cause like…the title is The Star-Touched Queen? Okay, this is me… shutting up… right now…possibly forever…okay not really, but still…my puns are getting out of control). From what I remember about this book, it had a lot of flowery descriptions (heck, it had a whole bouquet), such as this beauty: “I see only night and smoke, dreams and glass, embers and wings. And I would not have you any other way.” Yes dear friends, the prose is strong with this one.

How could I not choose Jude from The Folk of the Air series for this one? JUDE IS A FIERCE GODDESS WHO WILL POKE VICIOUSLY GOUGE YOUR EYES OUT WITH A STICK. And I mean that in the best way possible.

“Mr and Mrs Dursley, of number four, Privet Drive, were proud to say that they were perfectly normal, thank you very much.”

That one sentence fills me with so many feels (most of them nostalgic, happily-eating-ice-cream-cones-at-the-beach sort of feels), But seriously, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone is one of those books that I will never tire of. I will (and have) reread it a million times (and I’m only exaggerating this number a little).

A Curse So Dark and Lonely is a Beauty and the Beast retelling – but wait, before you roll your eyes and say, “Oh gosh, another one?” LET ME ASSURE YOU THAT IT IS UNLIKE ANY RETELLING YOU’VE EVER READ. (And also, let me just gouge your eyes out with my excessive usage of the Caps Lock here…but seriously, this book deserves ALL THE CAPS LOCK SCREAMING.)

The characters jumped right off the page and into my heart, which is just an all-around bad situation for my blood pressure, because of course a truckload of drama is going to be hauled into this story before my babies get their HEA. (In other words, I guess you can say I got a *tiny* bit invested). When the book ended, I literally sat there for twenty minutes, pondering my existence and how it was currently empty/meaningless/a mixture of the two because I did not have the sequel to this book in my hands at that very moment. Talk about the worst book hangover ever!

I don’t want to ruin the ending, but The Bird and the Blade made me feel all the feels. ALL. OF. THEM. I realize that claiming to have felt all the emotions of the human spectrum while reading a single book might sound like a hyperbole, but it’s not. I really do think I experienced them all as I went through the Five Stages of Grief for this book. I laughed, I cried; it was like a night at the opera (which is funny because this book is actually based off of an opera…go figure).

If you’ve been around for a bit, then you’d know that I’m very much into morally-grey antiheroes/heroines. Are they:

  • a) Good
  • b) Bad
  • c) All of the above

(Hint: The answer is C.)

For some reason, I absolutely thrive on these complex character arcs, and one of the best (worst?) ones I’ve ever read is Adelina from The Young Elite series.

I’m quickly learning that reading anything by Jay Kristoff is going to end up being one heck of a carriage ride. Yeah, you read that right: I said, “carriage ride,” not “rollercoaster ride.” Why? Because, we all expect rollercoasters to be fast-paced and exciting; that’s what we sign up for when we stand in line for three hours at Disneyland.

That being said, have you ever been in a horse-drawn carriage circa the 1700s? It sounds all romantic and picturesque in Jane Austen novels, but the reality is bumpy, stressful, and full of sharp turns that you didn’t see coming, both literally and figuratively (getting robbed by armed bandits being one of those figurative ones). It bears a remarkable resemblance to reading a Kristoff novel, doesn’t it? You think it’s going to be fun, but it ends up tearing out your very soul, like LIFEL1K3 did to me. And yet, strangely, I loved it?

I first picked up Legend back while I was but a wee lassie in high school, and despite all the attention the book was getting, I just couldn’t push myself to finish it. The reason? Day and June’s relationship felt too forced and insta-lovey to me, which is saying something because back then I ate cheesy Rom Coms for breakfast.

After Marie Lu’s announcement for a fourth book hit Twitter, I figured I should probably give the series another go and I am so glad I did because THE GLOW UP FROM LEGEND TO PRODIGY IS REAL, FOLKS. Day and June’s relationship becomes so much more complex and multifaceted, and I love that the author doesn’t just make all the hard stuff disappear because they are “IN LUVV.” By the final installment, I’m pretty sure I would have donated a kidney just to see June and Day happily together. I don’t really know how my kidney would have helped their relationship (kidneys aren’t very high on my list of romantic items), but you get what I mean.

First off, OH MY GOSH! There’s somebody else in this wide universe that hates peanut butter too! IT’S FATE. Becky and I are officially twinsies.

Secondly, Gone by Michael Grant was the very first book I ever listened to on audiobook, and it was then that I met the devil himself, Drake Merwin. If a story is only as good as its villain, then this one must be one heck of a classic, because Drake is a sick psychopath. He’s worse than Voldemort and Professor Umbridge COMBINED. Yeah, I went there.

Wow, Want is so diverse, it’s bursting with all it’s diverseness, and that’s the best part of this book! We’ve got Jason, the main character, who is Taiwanese-American. We’ve got Daiyu, the love interest, who is Taiwanese. Also, there are some great secondary characters, who include:

  • Victor = Filipino
  • Lingyi = Chinese/ Bisexual
  • Iris = Sapphic
  • Arun = Indian
Actual footage of me after eating all these pancakes.
Also, my waistline and I are in a fight right now.
Spoiler Alert: I’m losing.

Here’s the most important question you might ever have to answer: WAFFLES OR PANCAKES??

Are you super hungry for pancakes now, because I KNOW I AM.

Have you read any of these books? I would love to hear your thoughts about them!

Wasn’t this scene from Ralph Breaks the Internet SO DANG FUNNY?

Oh my gosh, Kat, this is such a cute tag (and not to commit total blasphemy on your blog, but I’m very much team pancakes, thank you)! Seems like it was just about made for you!

I have to admit, I actually haven’t read most of the books you’ve listed here. 🙈 It seems like that’s happening more and more often in tags. I love your answers, though! And A+ usage of the Wreck-It Ralph gifs. 😂

Thank you for the tag, too!

    • Kat @ Novels & Waffles June 28, 2019 at 4:12 pm - Reply

Thank you so much, Meaghan! And don’t worry – it’s not blasphemy! Pancakes are so delicious and I accept that fact 💛) But yeah, it does fit my “aesthetic” pretty well, huh? haha. Also, I’m so glad you like the Wreck-It-Ralph gifs. They were really fun to include! Thanks for stopping by and for your lovely comment 💛

I’m 100% Team Waffles. I love love love waffles, especially the crispy outside, soft inside, the tiny pockets that you pour syrup in 😍😍😍 And I don’t like PB either. I had a PB sandwich once, threw up, and was sick for the rest of the night. Though I like peanuts…but not PB!

I love all your answers. Only book here that I’ve read is The Wicked King, and thankfully I liked it!! I’m eagerly waiting for The Queen of Nothing! Jude and Cardan are amazing characters!!

I am wracking my brain right now, trying to place that scene from Ralph Breaks the Internet, but I can’t remember. I watched it recently, but I don’t remember that happening…however I still loved the movie!

Thank you so much for the tag ❤ I actually didn’t get a pingback (???) and am lucky that I stopped to read your post :)

    • Kat @ Novels & Waffles June 22, 2019 at 11:42 am - Reply

YESSSSSHHHH, Team Waffles all the wayyyy! 💛💛💛 And woah, you don’t like peanut butter either? We must be twins too :)

And I agree – I’m excited for The Queen of Nothing as well (but then again, after the ending of the last book, I don’t see how anybody could not be)!

The scene from Ralph Breaks the Internet was in the commercials, but not in the actual movie for some reason. That’s probably why you don’t remember it.

And weird…I’m sorry you didn’t get the pingback! Luckily you still figured it out 💛

The first thing I have to admit is that I actually prefer pancakes! * hides behind book in shame * I just get so annoyed every time I cut up a waffle and syrup starts flying everywhere! Although Belgian Waffles are a subcategory of waffle that ranks way higher than pancakes.

Okay. Now I can start talking about books! It’s funny because every time I’ve seen someone do this tag, the first book that comes to mind for a book with beautiful prose is A Star-Touched Queen, so I’m so happy to see that as your answer! And I totally agree with you about Jay Kristoff, his books are always so twisty and unexpected!

Also, any Wreck-It Ralph gif will always win my heart because of how much I love both those movies!

    • Kat @ Novels & Waffles June 22, 2019 at 2:03 pm - Reply

Pancakes are delicious, so I can’t blame you for loving them as much as you do 💛And yeah, the Star-Touched Queen’s writing style is very distinct. It works for some people, but it didn’t work so well with me. Have you read it at all?

And YES the Ralph movies are so fun, aren’t they???

  4. Becky (Blogs of a Bookaholic) June 22, 2019 at 9:39 am - Reply

Thanks so much for doing my tag Kat (even if it is a conflict of interest with waffles ;) ). It really means a lot!!! :D
I loved reading all your answers and you’re additional graphics were awesome.

Also, it’s good to have you back!

    • Kat @ Novels & Waffles June 22, 2019 at 2:04 pm - Reply

THANK YOU SO MUCH, BECKY! 💛💛💛 I loved doing this tag (even if it was about pancakes haha). And it’s good to be back :)

Can I be 50/50 on both pancakes and waffles? I’m kind of attached to both lol ;) , ESPECIALLY waffles with ice cream on top and pancakes with big goopy gobs of syrup dripping all over…oh no now I am hungry… I could really go for some breakfast foods…

Harry Potter is life and I was looking into a A Curse So Dark and Lonely! I’m glad you really enjoyed it, I might just have to make a trip to the library soon! Super cute post!! (Now I’m off to eat!)

    • Kat @ Novels & Waffles June 22, 2019 at 2:16 pm - Reply

Reading your comment got me hungry as well, hahaha. Breakfast foods are just the best, aren’t they? And I agree – HP forever!!! A Curse So Dark and Lonely is REALLY good; I would definitely recommend it! Thank you so much for your lovely comment! 💛

I’m 100% team pancakes, I just love them so much! Your answers are pretty much perfect, they are all perfectly matches the prompts :D I love June and Day so much, I think Legend is one of the best series out there!

  7. May @ Forever and Everly June 22, 2019 at 3:02 pm - Reply

I love this tag, Kat!! I really need to reread The Young Elites — they’re such good books but I hardly remember what happened, so I definitely should revisit the books! And speaking of Marie Lu, I adored June and Day SO much and I am literally so excited to read Rebel. I’m planning a reread of the trilogy later in fall to prepare for it and I can’t wait to have my heart broken by Champion’s ending again 😭

    • Kat @ Novels & Waffles June 28, 2019 at 2:46 pm - Reply

I’m totally awful when it comes to remembering what happens in books, so I understand the importance of rereading! I don’t know how people just remember everything with just one read! I wouldn’t even remember what I ate for breakfast if it wasn’t the same thing everyday (bet you can’t guess what it is haha).

And YES FOR REBELLLL! I am really interested in learning more about Eden because I feel like his personality was kind of “meh” in the books.

      • May @ Forever and Everly June 28, 2019 at 3:09 pm - Reply

Well, if I had to guess what you ate for breakfast, I’d have to go with… pancakes?? 😎😎

        • Kat @ Novels & Waffles June 28, 2019 at 4:15 pm - Reply

bwahahaha it was actually cereal, but let’s say it was waffles FOR THE AESTHETIC

  8. Caitlin @ Caitlin Althea June 23, 2019 at 12:38 am - Reply

I RELATE SO MUCH TO YOU GUSHING ABOUT PANCAKES IN THIS POST! but i do agree that waffles are better because of their little pockets that can better hold all the butter and topics that I would very much like to eat. also, have I said that I love you humor a lot? Because I really do and your posts give me *life*.

I have no idea how i was skeptical about adding A Curse So Dark and Lonely to my tbr. reading about your love for it is making me so excited to read it, and the fact that the hardcover is extremely gorgeous doesn’t hurt either. Want is also high on my tbr, becaue I’m all for diverse stories, especially ones with Asian rep and set in a non-Western setting!!

    • Kat @ Novels & Waffles June 28, 2019 at 2:50 pm - Reply

I am so, so honored that you like my humor because honestly I sometimes wonder if you all are just rolling your eyes at me haha. BUT GOSH YOU ARE SO KIND AND THANK YOU A MILLION TIMES OVER.

Honestly, A Curse So Dark and Lonely has been one of my favorite reads of the year (so far). I don’t shout about it enough, BUT I’LL START DOING THAT RIGHT NOW! READDDDD ITTTT! Haha, but seriously, it’s pretty great. Thanks for the lovely comment 💛

WOW! I totally thought you created this Kat when I first saw the title! How neat that your friend created it. I love the neat, different prompts. I actually did my first tag in a year today so I’m totally feeling the questions and your answers. I enjoyed LifeLike so much and The Bird and The Blade… but I really need to read Want and A Curse So Dark and Lonely. ❤️

    • Kat @ Novels & Waffles June 28, 2019 at 2:52 pm - Reply

Hahaha yeah, this tag totally fits me, doesn’t it? 💛And YES PLEASE DO READ THOSE BOOKS. But especially A Curse So Dark and Lonely. That book is just PERFECTION.

Ahh I’m so glad you did this tag, it’s such a fun one and I loved reading your answers. I really enjoyed The Star-Touched Queen and the prose was beautiful for sure! And I neeeeeeeeeed to continue reading the young elites series, as well as the legend series sometime :)
    Lovely answers! :)

I agree – this tag was SO fun! And YES PLEASE CONTINUE READING THE YOUNG ELITES AND LEGEND SERIES. I want to hear all your thoughts about them when you do (but also, I completely understand the struggle of series. Even when I like the first book, I often don’t ever pick up the next one for whatever reason??? idk)
