Let’s Make Some Waffles

⇢LU’S WRITING HAS MORE DEPTH. Can we just take a moment to appreciate the glow up that this series experienced? I was pretty on the fence about Legend when I initially read it back in high school, so much so that I didn’t even bother with the subsequent books (SHAME ON ME). But Champion was a strong finish to a series that I ended up thoroughly enjoying, years after I first picked it up. Not only did the writing improve, but the plot matured into something that stretched beyond the average dystopian novel, subverting many of the more trite and familiar tropes.

⇢JUNE AND DAY’S RELATIONSHIP BECAME MORE COMPLEX AND REAL. When June and Day first met, I thought that their relationship was going to be plagued by the dreaded instalove syndrome that infects so many books in the YA genre. But Champion proved me completely wrong – and I’m SO GLAD it did. Day and June’s romance is layered, multifaceted, and fraught with moral dilemmas that don’t magically disappear just because they are in LOOOoOOooOvvve. This book is an excellent example of what instant attraction looks like; sure, June and Day’s feelings for each other are quickly developed, but they have a realistic depth to them that many books do not.

⇢THE ENDING WAS BITTERSWEET AND BEAUTIFUL. We, as human beings, are constantly searching for that Hallmark-esque, ride-into-the-sunset “Happily Ever After” ending. We love it, we crave it, we need it. And although those endings can be satisfying, they can also feel artificial. In real life, there isn’t always a Prince Charming waiting for you at the end of the day; in fact, there might not be rainbows and unicorns and wedding bells in the picture at all. And that’s exactly what happens in Champion, and while some people will scream and rage at the unfairness of it all, I personally think that Lu crafted a beautiful ending that perfectly encompassed the series’ themes of sacrifice and hope.

⇢EDEN LACKS IN THE PERSONALITY DEPARTMENT. Day’s younger brother, Eden, has always played a major roll in the series, but his importance was even more pronounced in this final installment. The sad thing is this: Eden’s existence feels more like a plot device than anything else. He is Day’s motivation throughout the story, and at times, he seems to function as nothing more than a helpless prop. That being said, it looks like we’re getting a fourth Legend book almost entirely dedicated to Eden, so maybe that will change my opinion of him in the future.

⇢THERE WERE ASPECTS OF THE PLOT THAT FELT FAR-FETCHED. *WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD* So, you’re telling me that Day’s amnesia allows him to remember the deaths of his brother and his mother (both of which are events heavily tied to June), along with the fact that he no longer despises the Republic with his whole soul, but HE CAN’T REMEMBER JUNE HERSELF??? Honestly, that whole aspect of the plot was too contrived for my tastes, but I can overlook it because it produced the most sadly-sweet ending (see above for more details).

Marie Lu’s conclusion to her bestselling Legend series did not disappoint (though I’m definitely disappointed that this series is over). With plenty of political intrigue, angsty teenage love, and bittersweet goodbyes to go around, Champion was one of the best dystopian books I’ve read in recent memory, with a cast full of complex characters with even more complex motives.

My Rating: Me Likey

Book Aesthetic

Have you read Champion or any of the Legend series? What did you think of them?

What was your reaction to the ending?

Do you need a book to have a perfect “Happily Ever After” in order to enjoy it?

I feel like I haven’t gushed about your new blog enough yet, but it’s SO FREAKING BEAUTIFUL!! especially love your new icon and all the waffle ingredients in the background. It just fits into the Waffle theme so beautifully. Like the recipe card?? LOVE IT 💛

Also, I agree with so many points in your review. I loved Champion, especially seeing how far the trilogy has come, and I remember when I first read the series…the ending left me in TEARS. At the same time, I really wanted to see more from Eden because he had so much potential, but I’m so glad that we’re getting more in REBEL!

    Great review, Kat!!

I’m glad that you like the recipe card thingy because I’ve been wanting to change up how I do my reviews for awhile now, but haven’t been sure how to do it. Maybe now that I’m testing out a new format, I’ll be motivated to write more reviews….I have SO many I need to write….hahahasobs.

I’m so happy you enjoyed this Kat, I love this series! I think it was one of the best dystopia series out there, it’s just so well-developed and the characters felt like real people for me. I agree about Eden, I wish we got to see him more. The ending!!!! I’m so happy if we’re getting another book, I can’t stand not knowing what happened next!

It really is one of the best dystopian series – I agree! It avoids falling into the same old cliches that many books from this genre do. And YES to another book! Hopefully June and Day will FINALLY get their happy ending!

Kat, every time I come to your blog it looks more beautiful than before. 💕 Everything is so cute, and absolutely amazing.

And I’m so glad you liked Champion! I read it a few years ago, but I was worried that if I read it today, I would not like it nearly as much. I agree that the thing about Day at the end was a little bit of a stretch, and that part made me so mad and sad at the same time! Overall, I remember liking this series a lot, and now I’m looking forward to rereading it someday. :)

Oh my gosh! OH MY GOSH!!! Xandra, thank you so much 💛💛💛 That means the WORLD to me!

And I totally feel the same way about a lot of books I loved when I was younger – for example, I remember I actually really loved the first Selection book when I first read it…bwahahahahaha. But I know if reread it now, I would totally just cringe the whole time.

I just need to tell you again how much I love your new layout and review format. I haven’t read this series so I skimmed but I STILL NEEDED TO SHARE OKAY (also you should turn on post likes in your jetpack settings ok bye)

THANK YOU SO MUCH, KAL! I appreciate that! And gosh, I didn’t even realize that the likes were turned off. derp. Thanks for letting me know about that! I’ve loved being self-hosted so far, but there are so many little things (such as having the likes turned off) that I now have to deal with myself and it can be tiresome sometimes to get everything to work just right haha.

No problem, and i agree with you!!! Self hosted is awesome but there’s a bunch of tiny things hehe

Kat, I don’t want to sound like a broken record, but your blog’s aesthetic …. I physically can’t handle this level of perfection! YOUR BLOG IS JUST SO BEAUTIFUL! <3 <3 <3 This is such a great review btw, and I agree that this trilogy had a serious glow up! I was sort of "meh" about the first book, but I really enjoyed Champion! I totally agree about Day's amnesia and Edan's lack of character development! Those were the two aspects that really irked me about this one! I'm really looking forward to seeing that book about Edan though! :)

OH MY GOSH. Okay, so I’m a bit late responding to this comment, but I was totally having a bad day and then I read this comment AND MY HEART GREW THREE SIZES. Like seriously, thank you 💛💛💛 Also, I’m so glad that I wasn’t the only one thinking those things about Eden and Day at the end there.
