These Roses Aren't Sweet...They'll Kill You In Your Sleep // The Rose Society by Marie Lu

The Rose Society // Marie Lu // ★★★★★ – I could rant about how amazing this series is all day. I literally think I could. It has everything I love: anti-heroes, complex characters, wonderful character arcs, immersive world-building…..yeah, you get the idea.

City of Ghosts // Victoria Schwab // ★★★☆☆ – City of Ghosts was the perfect October read for a scaredy-cat like me; it got me into the Halloween mood and didn’t make me loose any sleep in the process.

Daughter of the Pirate King // Tricia Levenseller // ★★★★☆ – SO here we’ve got a female pirate who loves fashion and embraces the fact that being a women doesn’t make her weak, but strong. What isn’t there to like about that? PLUS THERE’S PIRATES. I WILL NEVER NOT READ A BOOK ABOUT PIRATES. YO HO, YO HO, A PIRATE’S LIFE FOR ME.

Pride //  Ibi Zoboi // ★★★☆☆ – This diverse retelling of Jane Austen’s most famous novel, Pride and Prejudice, beautifully explores themes of love, family and class. While I loved the sheer personality this story has (it very nearly exploded off the page), the romance was lacking any sort of spark for me. Which is too bad considering Pride and Prejudice is, you know, A LOVE STORY.

The Poppy War // R.F. Kuang // ★★★★★ – This. This book. I don’t even know what to say about it. The first half was immensely entertaining…the second half was not. But it wasn’t meant to be – it was meant to prove a point. The Poppy War has an agenda and it pushes it so powerfully that even now, a month later, I’m still recovering.

Empress of All Seasons // Emiko Jean // ★★★☆☆ – This book was my single most anticipated read of the entire year annnnnnnddddd…. it failed to live up to my expectations. Insert pouty face here.  The world-building and Japanese rep are wonderful, but I failed to connect with any of the characters. Sigh.

My Plain Jane // Cynthia Hand, Jodi Meadows, & Brodi Ashton  // ★★★★☆ –  My Plain Jane is such an absurdly inventive retelling of Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre that my mind is blown like an overused fuse every time I think about it. The book includes all the pivotal plot points from the original story, but recolors them in new, funny, and shocking ways. 1000000000000 points to Gryffindor for sheer creativity!

Christopher Robin // This movie was just one big helping of childhood nostalgia. The beginning was great – I loved that Christopher Robin’s life was shown to the audience like chapters from a book – but the ending was too typical to be anything truly memorable.

Pride & Prejudice // After reading Pride, I had to rewatch this movie, just to refresh my memory. And yep, Keira Knightley is still perfection. Oh, and yes, Darcy is still swoon-worthy. This movie never fails to give me chills. The good kind, of course.

Pride and Prejudice // It is a truth universally acknowledged, that Colin Firth spends wayyyyy too much time staring off into nothing. I mean, how many shots of a brooding Darcy do you really need in one film? Hardcore Jane Austen fans might cringe upon reading this, but I will forever love the 2005 version better. Fight me (but don’t actually – I hate drama and all sorts of confrontation. It gives me anxiety).

Sense and Sensibility // When I first saw this movie as a Harry-Potter-obsessed-sixteen-year-old (versus my current Harry-Potter-obsessed-20-something-year-old) all I could think of was this: “Why is Professor Snape wearing breeches?” In every scene, I kept expecting Colonel Brandon to say in that flat voice of his, “Turn to page 394!”

This time around though, all I could think of was: ALAN RICKMAN!!!!!! Which was then followed by some intense sobbing.

  • I went on a much-needed vacation.

  • I had the fabulous opportunity to guest post on Drizzle and Hurricane Books and participate in the ever-so-important Shattering Stigmas Event. You rock, Marie!
  • I got my first ARC EVER! I’d like to thank the Academy, my mom, my pet goldfish that died three years ago, that one guy who served me my Sub sandwich last week…
  • I got accepted for my first Blog Tour – I’ll be posting that on November 15th, so be on the lookout!
  • I was interviewed by the wonderful Ivy @ Raine Reads. She’s awesome – you should go check out her blog and send her some love if you haven’t already.
  • I started my first-ever buddy read with the sugar-sweet May @ My 1st Chapter. I love that human. She’s a good one.
  • I redesigned my logo because I’m a perfectionist and I have a serious problem.

What did you read in October?

Have you read any of these books or seen any of these movies? What did you think of them?

Tell me about your month in the comments!

Ooh okay you’ve totally just convinced me that I DO need to read The Young Elites soon. I’ve had it sitting on my shelf since it came out but haven’t gotten around to it! And obviously this needs to change! Aghhh I really need to catch up on Marie Lu books.

ALSO I just have to say your blog design NEVER fails to amaze me Kat. All these graphics are so cute and everything is so well put together and I’m just 😍😍😍 It’s so good!!

It seems like you had a good reading month, that’s nice! I’m sorry that Pride kind of disappointed you on the romance front though, that’s too bad :/
YAY for vacation and congratulations on getting your first ARC, that’s amazing! 😍
    I hope you’ll have a lovely November <3

MARIE, THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! I say this a lot, but your words mean a lot to me, so thanks! And yeah, I personally felt that the the romance in Pride lacked chemistry, but that’s just my own opinion. I hope you have a lovely November too!

I’m so glad you liked the Rose Society, I LOVE this Series so much 😍 I also read City of Ghosts and pretty much had the same rating, it was a good not really scary but eerie book for the Season, but that was it 😃

    • Kat @ Novels & Waffles November 3, 2018 at 7:01 pm - Reply

I’m glad to hear you like the series too! I’m excited to finish up the last book this month! And yeah, City of Ghosts was a fun read, but it didn’t blow me away as much as I would expect from an author like Schwab. Thanks for stopping by, Caro :)

Bwahahahaha congrats on your ARC! I love your icons to show your like etc. And do I sense a jane Austen theme here? Now the movies I watched in October: A Star is Born with Bradley Cooper and lady Gaga. I loved it!!!

    • Kat @ Novels & Waffles November 5, 2018 at 1:31 pm - Reply

Hahaha yeah – I definitely went on a Jane Austen kick. TBH I just ADORE period dramas. They are like medicine to my soul. Thanks for your kind words, and I’ve been seeing commercials for A Star is Born. Was it any good?

  5. Ivy @ Raine Reads November 4, 2018 at 9:47 am - Reply

Thank you so much for your kind words, Kat 😊
And your logo redesign looks perfect, of course!

Thanks, Ivy! It means a lot that you would say that :) I hope you have a wonderful November!

So great to see a post from you again, doll! Your graphics are as gorgeous as ever and I’m loving the new logo! SO CUTE! I’m really happy that you love Daughter of the Pirate King (the sequel is great as well!)! Congrats on the ARC and blog tour! That’s so exciting!

I hope you have a wonderful November, beautiful! ❤️

    • Kat @ Novels & Waffles November 5, 2018 at 1:28 pm - Reply

Thanks, Kelly! I am so glad you like the new logo! I was sort of iffy on changing, since I feel like I just started blogging and it might be too soon to change things up??? But I’m a perfectionist so oops haha. I’m glad you liked both Daughter of the Pirate King and its sequel! I’m excited to read the next one :)

I hope you have a wonderful November too!

      • Kelly Brigid November 6, 2018 at 6:23 am - Reply

I literally changed my design like 10 times in the first month, so I totally feel ya! 😂

        • Kat @ Novels & Waffles November 8, 2018 at 5:03 pm - Reply

This makes me feel so verified in my life choices haha. I’m glad I’m not alone in my indecision :)

  7. trufflereads November 4, 2018 at 10:13 pm - Reply

I’m honestly scared of The Poppy War and probably won’t pick it up cause if just seems too real and too serious but I’m glad so many people are loving it ❤️

    • Kat @ Novels & Waffles November 5, 2018 at 1:35 pm - Reply

It is really pretty heavy, and it doesn’t shy away from showing what war really is like. I can totally see why you might not want to read it. Honestly, I think I must just have a rock for a heart because all I read are serious books. I need to find something cutesy and fluffy to read soon haha. Anything you’ve read lately that you liked?

      • trufflereads November 5, 2018 at 5:03 pm - Reply

Yes haha lately I kinda want fluffy stuff too, hmm my recs are (if you haven’t already read them lol); anything by Morgan Matson, the Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang, anything by Emery Lord is a fluffy contemporary, and I can’t think of anything else ATM haha

        • Kat @ Novels & Waffles November 8, 2018 at 4:35 pm - Reply

Thanks so much for your recs, Tracy! The only book I’ve heard of by Emery Lord is Open Road Summer, but it sounded so light and cutesy, which I keep telling myself I need more of, but then go on to read things like Poppy War anyways??? I confuse myself haha

          • trufflereads November 8, 2018 at 5:10 pm

haha yes that’s a okay one, I prefer The Start of Me and You by Emery Lord. lol the choices we make sometimes haha

Okay, great! Thanks for being so understanding! I started reading Shadow of the Fox again, AND OH MY GOSH. I AM SO IN LOVE WITH IT. Like, it encompasses Japanese culture SO WELLLLLL.

I’m so happy to see that you gave a thumbs up to Rose Society. I have all three books of the The Young Elites, I just need to find time to binge read the series. I haven’t read Pride and Prejudice yet, but I do have to agree with you, the Keira Knightley version is my favorite. You had a lot of firsts this past month, very exciting. Happy November.

    • Kat @ Novels & Waffles November 8, 2018 at 4:26 pm - Reply

I hope that you get the chance to read The Young Elites sometime, Jovita! I would love to hear your thoughts on them once you do read them. I am glad that you like the Keira Knightly version best too! It makes me feel like less than a weirdo, cause I think most people like the Collin Firth version better for whatever reason??? Anyways, I hope you have a wonderful November too! Thanks for stopping by :)

Congrats on your first ARC! I’M SO HAPPY FOR YOU.

I’m seeing a lot of 3 stars going around for Empire of Seasons which is a shame because it sounds so epic! That blurb literally caters to all my book interests so now I’m really torn on whether to give it a go or not. :S

Glad to hear you enjoyed Christoper Robbin, I’m looking forward to that one. My movies this month can be summed up with one word: Superheroes. :D

    • Kat @ Novels & Waffles November 8, 2018 at 4:45 pm - Reply

THANK YOU SO MUCH, BECKY!!! It was quite a great moment for me. And yes, when I first read the blurb of Empress of Seasons, I was like, “THIS IS EVERYTHING I COULD EVER WANT.” But then I read it. And don’t get me wrong, it’s still great, and I would still recommend it. There are just some things that didn’t work for me. I’m going to be part of a blog tour for it next week, so keep the lookout for a full review about it, in case you are curious for more details :) Thanks for always being so supportive!

Ooh yes Pride & Prejudice! I love love love the 2005 version and no matter what anyone say, Keira and Matthew will always be my Lizzie & Darcy <3

    • Kat @ Novels & Waffles November 8, 2018 at 5:01 pm - Reply

I am 100000000% behind you on this. the 2005 version was the first time I ever encountered Pride & Prejudice in any way, so it will always be my fav too :)

  13. Erin @ Pages of Milk and Honey November 6, 2018 at 3:54 am - Reply

I’m the worst because I’ve never read Pride and Prejudice nor have I ever seen a filmic version of it, but I still love it so much???!! But also I love Colin Firth, which makes even less sense. But I have seen/read Bridget Jones’ Diary, which I loved and ALSO has Colin Firth. But still. Also, “Why is Professor Snape wearing breeches” is just one of my favourite lines ever. (I still can’t get over his marriage to Professor Trelawney in Love Actually. It makes me uncomfortably giggle every single time I watch it.)

    • Kat @ Novels & Waffles November 8, 2018 at 5:02 pm - Reply

You’ve never seen a Pride and Prejudice adaption? You totally should! They are the best! But then again, I’m a total Period Drama Addict, so maybe I’m biased…. :)

      • Erin @ Pages of Milk and Honey November 9, 2018 at 1:03 am - Reply

Oh that’s totally fine, I’ve rewatched Downton Abbey more times than I can count, I think. Period dramas are the BEST kind of dramas.

        • Kat @ Novels & Waffles November 9, 2018 at 8:11 pm - Reply

DOWNTON ABBEY IS MY JAM!!! I will still never get over that they killed off Matthew though.

Seems like you had a good month reading-wise. I managed to read only 4 books :P I love the 2005 P&P movie too.

    • Kat @ Novels & Waffles November 8, 2018 at 8:25 pm - Reply

Dawwww, thank you so much, Rachel! I appreciate that so much! And YESH. I was fully anticipating it to be a 5 star read, so when it was closer to 3, I was sad.

I loved reading this post Kat! I just finished reading Daughter of the Pirate King today and loved it—it was such a fun read.

Thanks so much, Annie! Ah oh, I’m so glad to hear you liked DOTPK too! It was a fun read, wasn’t it! I MEAN COME ON! IT HAS PIRATES!!! Who doesn’t love pirates? Are you going to read Daughter of the Siren Queen?

      • Annie @ Blossoms and Bullet Journals November 14, 2018 at 6:26 am - Reply

YES I LOVE PIRATES. Yeah, I plan on picking it up at some point. I gotta say, I already feel plot-twisted by it because I assumed the second book would be about finding the second piece of the map, but I read the synopsis on Goodreads yesterday and apparently it’s something totally different. Will you read it?

        • Kat @ Novels & Waffles November 17, 2018 at 8:27 pm - Reply

I totally want to read it, but I am so bad at continuing series. Like, I start one and even if I love it, I don’t continue one for some reason???? I guess there are just too many books I want to read haha. Let me know your thoughts when you get to it !
