fictional characters who would be best friends featured image

There’s something that all of us (hopefully) have. Something that all of us need. And no, it isn’t waffles. I’m shook that those words even came out of my mouth because I usually operate under the firm belief that everything can be solved with a delicious stack of waffles. But if it’s not waffles, then what is this mysterious, unnamed thing that we all need? I could leave you in suspense and end this post right here, but that would be ridiculous (and anticlimactic as heck), so I’ll take pity on the world and tell you: it’s a friend. A BEST friend, to be precise.

Does this reference make me look old?

Maybe your best friend is your neighbor who lives down the street and has been eating all the food in your fridge since before either of you knew how to put a thumb to a keypad. Or maybe it’s your grumpy, yet lovable, kitty who always decides that the best time to sit on your head is when you’re trying to sleep. (To be fair, there really isn’t ever a “best time” for head-sitting.) Maybe it’s your old lab partner from that freshman biology course you both nearly failed; maybe it’s your mother and together you hold Hallmark movie channel marathons once a month (which sounds more like a unique form of torture to me, but to each their own. No judgment here).

Maybe it’s your significant other, maybe it’s your spouse; maybe it’s your sibling. No matter who it is, all of us need friends. We need the Timon to our Pumbaa. The Pooh to our Piglet. The Woody to our Buzz. The Mike to our Sully. Okay Kat, enough with the Disney references.

True friendships, like books, are a special sort of magic; they can withstand time, cross great distances, and even transcend silly little man-made conventions such as multiverses.

That being said, here are five pairs of characters I think would be BFFL (pronounced as, “biffle”), if only they were blessed to live in the same bookiverse. (We won’t even mention the fact that they aren’t real so they could never actually be best friends…BECAUSE THEY’RE REAL TO ME, ALRIGHT?).

Book Characters that Would Be Best Friends

1. Kimi Nakamura & Maia Tamarin

Kimi loves a good fashion statement. She loves to create bold outfits that make her and her friends feel brave, fabulous, and like the Ultimate versions of themselves.

Maia is extremely passionate about her sewing, so much so that she dresses up as a boy and risks a honorless, painful execution in order to pursue her dream of becoming a renowned tailor.

Together, Kimi and Maia would totally spend all of their time geeking out over color swatches, sewing patterns, and clothing designs. I have no doubt that if these two existed in the same bookiverse, their love of their craft would bring out a love for each other

(Also, can you imagine if Akira got Edan to dress up in that giant mochi costume??? I think my stomach would pop like a balloon from too much laughter).

2. Ana & Eve

Ana and Eve both inhabit worlds full of androids, mechanical hybrids, and complex machinery. Although Ana lives out her days as a “Princess” in a dark Disneyland knockoff called The Kingdom™ and Eve’s home is more of a post-apocalyptic scrap pile located in a crumbling dumpster town, I think they’d be able to bond over certain *issues* anyways. I don’t want to say more, for fear of spoilers, but yes. They have a lot in common. Also, I think Ana would appreciate Eve’s electric baseball bat, Excalibur.

3. Yumeko & Miyoung

Yumeko and Miyoung are both half-human and half-fox and they constantly have to hide this fact from all those around them. If they existed in the same bookiverse, they obviously wouldn’t have a thing in common (please note that these words are positively DRIPPING with sarcasm haha).

Okay but seriously, wouldn’t it be so validating to find another half-human-half-fox girl who understood the struggles of living in two worlds? Although…I bet no-nonsense Miyoung would NOT be amused if Yumeko tried to play some sort of prank on her…which she inevitably would.

Forgive my awful kanji…I’m super out of practice.

4. Séverin Montagnet-Alarie & Kaz Brekker

Okay, so either these two butt-kicking, heist-planning, emotionally-scarred dappers would be best friends or they would constantly be at each other’s throats, continually planning how to outmaneuver and ultimately kill the other. It’s kind of a toss up.

5. Elisabeth Scrivener & Meggie Folchart

Elisabeth and Meggie both know that a good book holds more between its pages than just mere ink and words; it can hold entire worlds and even world-altering magic. They both know that the written word is a powerful thing, and that you have to be careful with it.

Nothing quite brings two people together like a love for books, and I can picture Elisabeth and Meggie spending hours together, sitting in some library, talking about their unending TBRs and their most recent reads. Bookish Besties are the best kind of besties, wouldn’t you agree?

What are some fictional characters from different books that you think would be best friends?

What did you think of my pairings? Do you agree or disagree with them? Why?

This is such a lovely post idea! 💛 I definitely agree that Elisabeth and Meggie could be such great friends!! Their respective books are full of book love and reading, it makes me so happy! I think I’ll have to reread Inkheart again some time 🥰

I love this post and the idea!!! And your graphics are amazing as always 💛🧡
That does it. If you think that Kaz can be friends with Séverin Montagnet-Alarie, then I NEED to read The Gilded Wolves. I’ve been rather on the fence about it (okay, tbh I didn’t want to read it), but anybody who could possibly be best friends with Kaz, I need to know who and why, and their story. Thank you for convincing me!
I’m also glad that you liked Spin the Dawn!! Edan and Maia are such great characters!

I still need to read these books but a fair few are high priority on my TBR so hopefully I’ll get to them soon. Your reasoning behind each friendship makes sense though and I absolutely adore this idea (:
